“Oh my god, you have a baby growing in your belly! How far along are you? What is the surprise for him? Why am I Maid of Honour and not Jane? What happened to Jane? Oh man she will be pissed, and she will hate me more. I think that’s it.” She laughs at herself. I spend the next few minutes answering the questions she keeps coming up with. When we walk into the shop for my fitting, Jane is nowhere to be seen. I look at my phone to call her but she doesn’t answer. Oh well, I’ll try and catch her later. At least I don’t have to deal with that right now.

“Are you ready? Only three weeks until the wedding, you will have one more fitting the week before, then that’s it,” the lady from the bridal shop says, as I’m handed a glass a fizz. Tasting the delicious bubbles, I feel so excited when I see Millie glaring at me and then looking at the glass in my hand.Oh shit, what am I doing? I don’t know what to do!

“I’ll take that,” Millie says, “you need to go try your dress on.” She takes it out of my hand and I frown at her. She laughs and, sits down and starts drinking the fizz herself. The girls all start chatting while the lady, who I think is called Tabitha, takes me into the fitting room. I’m only a few weeks pregnant but I have to say something, I don’t know how fast my tummy will grow and this dress leaves nothing to the imagination.

“Um…” I whisper, “You need to leave a little room in the tummy area.” I gesture towards my stomach, and watch as she tries to catch on to what I’m saying.

“Oh…oh gosh…really? How exciting.” I hold my fingers to her lips to stop her talking, and she nods at me.

“I’m not sure it will make a difference. You have three weeks until the wedding. I’m sure you will be fine.”

“Thank you, I was so worried.”

“I’ll go and get you another glass of fizz,” and she mouths ‘non-alcoholic’ to me. Well, that’s one thing sorted, now to get through the rest of today, with no drink, and this evening. With no drinks, this is never going to work. Everyone knows I love a drink, how am I going to pull this off?

There was a reason Millie was in my life. All afternoon, she has been going to the bar for everyone, placing most of the drinks orders, and drinking all the drinks the girls have been buying for me and she is hammered. She is the best Maid of honour ever! There is still no sign of Jane. I’ve called her a few times with no answer.

Millie

“Oh god, I feel sick. I can’t drink anymore, please don’t make me drink anymore.” I’m practically lying on the sofa in the bar. I know I said the words but I’m not sure how they came out, slurred, mumbles, maybe even in another language, and not anyone I know would understand or be able to translate. Em and the others are laughing at me, they think I’m a lightweight, but I’ve had almost double of what they have had. Em hugs me from the side

“I don’t know what I would have done without you this afternoon, you have saved me. I’m also sorry,” she whispers to me.

It’s not good. I’m going to be sick. I sit up too quickly and my head spins, while my stomach churns. When I stand, I swear thefloor moves, so I take my shoes off; it’s the safest option. I start weaving in and out of the crowd towards the loo when I spot Jane halfway there. She’s walking over to me, she looks pissed. Her jaw is set, and her eyes narrowed on me. It’s not a great look on her, I can’t be bothered with her agro, so I move faster and walk into the ladies’ loo, hoping she’ll leave me alone. I’m in no fit state to deal with her shit but what a surprise, she comes in behind me and locks the door after her. Just the two of us. Great.

“What do you want Jane?” I ask, my head still spinning with every move I make. She walks right up to me, and pushes me against the wall.

“What the fuck, get off me!” I try to push her away, but she slams me back and I hit my head hard on the wall. My vision blurs for a split second, the spinning in my head makes me wobble a little.

“Jane, get off! What have I done?” Shit, I can’t get free, she’s so much stronger than she looks. Her hands are pushing my chest, using her full weight to keep me against the wall.

“You know what you have done, you ruined everything,” she shouts in my face. “Do you think that the whole hen do was actually planned for us to go to London? I had it all planned out…and it was working, up until you got your fucking nose in the way.” Wow, what a bitch! “Jack is meant to be mine! And you stole him away from me!” She grabs my hair as I try to push her away again. “And now this… you’re stealing my best friend too.”

“I’ve not done anything. Ahh… you’re hurting me.” She pushes me to the wall again, but I manage to push her off this time. As soon as I look up, I feel the back of her hand across my face. My head snaps to the side and I fly backwards, hitting the floor.

“You deserve every shitty thing you get in life, you dirty slut!” she says and I watch her walk out, leaving me on the floor.

Well, that was a slightly different end to the afternoon than I thought. I pull myself up from the floor, feeling slightly moresober. A massive wave of dizziness washes over me, and I stumble over to the loo and throw up.

“Why…?” I cry into the loo. What have I ever done to deserve this shit!As soon as I start to feel happy, I get hurt. My face feels swollen already; the bitch was wearing rings when she gave me that backhander. When I eventually stand up, my head is pounding. I feel dizzy – time to go home and be by myself.

I walk over to the sink, wash my face with cold water, and wince, my cheek starts to sting. When I look up into the mirror, my cheek is bright red, with two small cuts from where her rings caught my skin; the bruising is already starting to show.

“Fuck sake,” I swear into the mirror, “I can’t even sneak out.” I left my bag and shoes on the table. I have a spare key in the garden; I’ll walk back and hide for a few days. Jack’s busy anyway, it should go down by the time I get to work on Monday. It’s only Friday afternoon, plenty of time to sort it out,I think, completely forgetting about work at the pub over the weekend. Bracing myself on the sink, I take a few deep breaths and head out the door, a little wobbly.

I’m ready to head off when I see Jane in Emma’s face. Jane looks like she is going to slap her. Oh my god..

I see red, and before I can even think about it, I’m running towards them. Janes raises her hand to Emma.. but she slaps me instead as I step in between them. The same cheek as before, and I hit the ground.

“You both deserve each other!” she screams before two guys drag her, kicking and screaming outside.

“Shit, Millie are you okay? Why did you stand in front of me?” Em asks, as she bends down to me.

“I didn’t want her to hit you.” I looked at her tummy and she sighed. “Besides, she already backhanded me in the loo, and smashed my head against the wall.”

“Are you fucking kidding me? She did that? Your face. Shit… it’s cut and swollen. I’m taking you to the hospital.” I roll my eyes at her and go to grab my shoes when the room spins and I stumble forward, clutching onto the seat beside me for support.

“Em? I think… I… might… I… feel…” All the weight lifts from my body; I feel like I’m falling as blackness clouds my vision.
