“Everything okay?” he asked her as they set up the sparring mats. He knew he couldn’t hide his concern, so he made no effort.

“Yeah, I’m good. Just a little tired today, I guess. I didn’t sleep the best last night,” she replied.

Spencer patted her shoulder as he set everyone up with partners for the drills. They went through the basic defensive and then offensive drills. He wanted everyone to remember how to fight in their human form. When they shifted into wolf forms, their pure instinct took over. They were better able to read each other, communicate with each other through telepathy. They were more tuned into their heightened senses and primal survival needs.

When Adria was thrown down for the third time during an easy maneuver, Spencer stopped her and her partner. She was way off. There was no way she could be that tired, just last week, she was nailing every drill with ease and he was thinking of having her take over as an instructor, but now he wasn’t so sure. Spencer wondered if the thought of possibly facing her father was starting to get to her. He didn’t really blame her, but he needed her to keep it together the most.

They were still the only ones who knew that the hunter was her father, and he planned on keeping it that way, for her sake. He set her partner up with someone else and took her off to the side to talk. She was sweating more than usual and breathing rather heavily for the light drills they were doing.

“What’s going on, Adria? And don’t tell me it's nothing because I can see it. Something is going on. You have never been this off before. You always get every drill with ease, and now you're having trouble keeping up even the simplest ones,” he said with concern.

“I don’t know,” she replied, not looking him in the eyes.

“Is it because of your father? I understand if you’ve had a change of heart and would prefer—”

“No!” she cut him off abruptly. “No, it’s ok, I’ll get it together. I promise. Maybe I just need a little rest,” she pleaded with him. He didn’t believe her but didn’t want to pry. She hadbeen through too much. He had a little more of a soft spot for her than he thought, than he wanted to right now, as he nodded and hugged her.

“Okay, but just know that, if it keeps up, I'll have no choice but to bench you. Don’t take it personally, but with you being part of our front line, we need you up and ready for whatever the hunter throws at us.” He kissed her forehead before she gathered her stuff and left the hall.

“What’s going on with Adria? Is everything okay?” Benet asked, coming up beside him. They both watched her leave with concern.

“Something is going on, but she won't tell me. I don’t know what to do. She's amazing when she's on point, but, right now, she seems a million miles away.” He shook his head and looked at his friend.

“Could it have anything to do with the fact that you guys slept together?” Benet asked bluntly. Spencer did a double take as his jaw dropped. “What? You didn’t think anyone would find out? She does talk to the girls, you know. As your dad always said, ‘the walls have ears.’ We were all wondering if you guys were official yet,” he said, smirking.

“What? No. Nothing official, and I can't believe… Does the whole town know, for crying out loud?” Spencer whispered, looking around the hall while mortified that people were discussing his love life. Not that he tried to hide it much before. Those girls didn’t mean anything to him; they were just out to have a good time like him. Adria… Well, she was different.

“No, not the whole town.” He laughed. “Just us. Don’t worry so much. This is a lot better than you guys fighting, or you being a jerk and her running away,” he added.

“I’m never going to live that down, am I?” Spencer rolled his eyes in frustration. “Get back to work, we need to train.” Heplayfully punched Benet in the shoulder, as they headed back to the mats.

For the next few hours, he dove into the training, working people until they moved effortlessly and knew every strike and counterstrike possible. After everyone was done with the day, he let his mind wander to Adria. He needed to talk to her again. He needed her to know that, even though he wanted her close to him, she didn’t have to be on the front line. There were other important roles she could take on if it was going to be easier for her. Instead of going home, he drove to her aunt's house. When he knocked on the door, he was greeted warmly by Aunt Lily.

“She’s in the backyard right now on the phone, but you can go see her. I'm sure she won't be long.” She smiled.

Spencer thanked her and went through the house to the back door. Adria was sitting with her back to him on one of the patio chairs. He didn’t mean to or want to listen in on the conversation, but he couldn’t help but overhear.

“I know my options, and I’m just not sure right now. I still have some time.” She paused before saying, “I know stress isn’t good, but a lot is going on, as you know.” After another brief pause, she added, “Yes, I’ll think about it and let you know what I decide.” She ended the call. When she got up and turned around, seeing him at the door, she jumped and let out a yelp of surprise.

“Spencer! You scared me half to death!” She held onto the back of the chair as she tried to catch her breath. Spencer's blood started to boil with what he had just heard.

“Who was that?” he demanded to know. His mind raced with thoughts he didn’t want to be thinking, but he couldn’t help it. He was stressed and worried. He had the fate of the entire pack on his shoulders, and she seemed to be suddenly acting very shady.

“Who? Oh, on the phone? It was nobody, nothing to worry about.” She tried to smile weakly, he knew she was hiding something, and now was not the time to hide anything.

“Don't tell me that. Don’t lie to me. Not now, Adria. Who was that?” He had a fleeting thought that it was her father. He had found her, and she had decided to help him on his quest for vengeance. Spencer tried to shove the ludicrous thought away, but she had never hidden anything from him, never lied to him.

“Spencer.” She sighed. “I can’t tell you right now, but please trust me. It’s nothing bad. It just has to do with my female parts.” He could tell she was skidding around the whole truth but decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. Some things were just not his business.

“Are you ok?” he asked, a little more concerned about her health now.

“Yes, I’m fine, okay?” He could tell she wanted to drop it, and he let her. Just for now.

Chapter 7 - Adria

Adria breathed a sigh of relief, as she watched Spencer drive away. She hated hiding this from him, but she didn’t know what to do.

When she found out she was pregnant, it was a complete shock. The doctor was worried about her stress level, with everything going on, and how it could affect the baby if she decided to go through with the pregnancy. Adria knew that, without a doubt, she was going to go through with it. She was excited and scared all at the same time. She just wasn’t sure about Spencer. He had the pack and the hunter to worry about. She didn’t want to add a baby into the mix, not right now. She had no idea if he even wanted to be a father, or what his views of his future family life would be. Out of all the things they ever talked about, that subject never came up.
