“Not really. We’re all hockey players. These are my best friends. From college,” I add.

“Crown Point University,” he says. “Right. So you all showed up to escort her… Does this have anything to do with that hypothetical betting fraud you were talking about?”

Behind me, they all groan. All of them.

I spin around. “What? He saidhypothetical!”

“For fuck’s sake, Knox,” Greyson snaps.

“We’respies!” What is with these people?

“We are not spies,” Aurora says firmly. “We are not on a mission. We’re not doing anything with betting fraud, hypothetical or not. Okay?”

He eyes us like he doesn’t really believe a word she said. And that’s fine, since, you know, we can ice him out anyway.

But then he says, “I want to help.”

We all exchange glances. I shrug.

Aurora shrugs.

Greyson and Steele seem the most suspicious, and Miles only stares at me.

“What’s to say you won’t run back to?—”

“Luke Abernathy?” Church tilts his head.

I hold up my hands. “I didnottell him that. Not even a little bit.” How did he know? Is he a mind reader? Wait.DidI say it? No, I absolutely wouldn’t have. “I didn’t,” I repeat.

“Okay.” Miles shakes his head at me. “Whether you did or didn’t is irrelevant. Why are you bringing his name into this, Church?”

“Because he’s been doing this for years. But it’s time he was stopped.”

His expression is dark, and I think I like him even more than I did a few seconds ago. It reminds me of the look on Greyson’s face when he told me he had a guy unconscious in the back of his truck.

“I want to put an end to it,” he continues. “But I haven’t been able to do it alone.”

“Really.” Steele crosses his arms. “And we’re supposed to believe you’re not working with him?”

Church shrugs. “I’ll tell you anything you want to know. Believe me or not, it’s up to you.”

We all exchange glances.

I don’t know. I feel too close to it.

“Meet us at Jacob and Knox’s building in an hour,” Greyson decides. “We’ll talk it over.”

Church meets my eyes, then nods slowly. He turns and heads back into the building, leaving the five of us standing in stunned silence.

“Do we believe him?” Aurora asks.

“I mean, he seemed serious,” I say. “But we should vote.”

Miles scoffs. “Since when do you care about a vote?”

“Since Aurora,” I snap.

Silence.
