This has to be my punishment for being an awful husband.

“Where the fuck did she go?” I repeat, this time to my friends. “Where would she go? Why did she leave? I mean—obviouslyit’s because I tried to get her to leave Denver. She was upset. I handcuffed her to the bed while I packed. I?—"

“Knox.”

“What?” I snap.

“Shut up for two seconds.”

I glare at Greyson. He lets in Miles and Jacob, and I stay quiet while Greyson gives them the short version of my blunder. He repeats it again when Steele enters with coffees balanced in his arms.

“So…” Jacob grabs Aurora’s laptop from the office. “Any guesses on her password?”

“Knox-is-an-ass-sixty-nine?” I guess.

Steele snorts.

Jacob sighs and types something in. “Hey, it worked!”

My jaw drops. “She didnot?—”

“Nah, she didn’t. Sucker.” Jacob grins.

Great. “She’smissing. This isn’t the time to make jokes.”

Steele flops on the couch. He makes a weird face and shifts to the side, pulling out the slim black phone.

I stare at it. “Wait. We know where she went.”

I’m such an idiot.

“She’s playing right into his hand.”

“Whose?” Jacob demands. “Abernathy?”

I pocket the phone. “Of course, Abernathy. Why would he give her the ring? So she’d leave here and go see Joel. I just didn’t expect her to go in the middle of the night.”

They nod. They’re agreeing with me. It only makes sense, doesn’t it?

Off we go.

AURORA

“Are you kidnapping me?” I demand, fighting Camden Church’s grip on my upper arm. “Knox is going to kill you for this.”

I mean, Itrustedhim. Not a lot, but enough. More than any of the other guys did. And when he burst into Joel’s apartment and dragged me away from him, I didn’t really have any words. Not when Camden just pointed at Joel and snarled something about owing him something.

Joel let us leave his apartment without a fight.

“He’ll understand when you both realize Luke is on his way to Joel’s apartment,” Camden snaps. “Stop fighting me. I’m trying tohelpyou.”

We’re in the stairwell of Joel’s high-rise, going up instead of down.

I give in, and our steps come faster. He breathes out a small sigh of relief, then opens the door onto the fifteenth floor. My chest is pounding by the time we stop. I lean over, focusing on catching my breath, while he peeks around the corner.

“What the fuck?” I gasp. “Explain. Right now.”
