KNOX

Ididn’t mean for him to die so quickly.

I know that’s morbid. Iknowit’s bad. It’s kind of sick, in a way, to have wanted him to suffer longer. But he was up in front of Sunny, and I just wanted it to be over. I wanted him to stop touching her, stop hurting her?—

So I stabbed his throat and covered her with his blood in the process.

She’s like that movie character, the girl who gets drenched in blood at prom or whatever. Minus the white dress. And the crowd of laughing teens—you know what, never mind.

We look down at him for what feels like an eon, just waiting. Part of me thinks he’s going to burst back to life. But he doesn’t. I scoop her up, holding her close. She buries her face in my neck, but she’s not crying. She’s not even shaking.

“My chest hurts,” she whispers.

I look down at her, keeping her close. Her chest. Her heart?

“I’m getting you out of here,” I promise. I carry her out, my steps coming fast. Through the long, dark hallway. Up a flight of metal stairs.

My friends are just arriving when I burst out into the alleyway.

Greyson takes one look at us and goes running for something in the trunk of his rental car. He pulls out wipes and roughly swipes at my skin. My grip on Aurora tightens, but Greyson ignores us until the blood is gone from my face and neck.

He turns to her, and she flinches into me with every touch.

“Sorry, Aurora,” he murmurs. “We need to get you guys in new clothes.”

“She has to go to the hospital,” I reply. “Right now.”

Jacob stops beside me. “You cannot go like this. They’ll ask too many questions. We either clean you up, or they’ll call the police.”

I nod slowly. Greyson gets us clothes—leggings and a zip-up sweatshirt for Aurora, a new shirt for me. When I set her down, she only clings tighter.

“Just a moment,” I whisper to her, kissing her hair. The guys give us privacy. We’re blocked by the car’s open doors. I change out her clothes, dropping the wet, bloody fabric to the ground.

It’s then that I notice her shoulder.

It looks… dislocated. Her expression is vacant.

“Guys?” My fucking voice trembles. I get the sweatshirt on, zipping it up so they don’t see anything they shouldn’t.

Steele appears.

“Her shoulder is dislocated. We need to get to a hospitalnow.”

“I’ll drive.” He flashes keys at me.

I pick Aurora up again and follow him out. She buries her face in my neck again. We get in the backseat of Jacob’s truck and Steele takes off. Out of the alley, bumping out onto the main road.

Her wet hair soaks my shoulder. She’s a mess. It physically hurts me to see her like this, and that rage that made me act so quickly, sohastily, comes rushing back.

Suddenly, she coughs. Blood comes out, on her lips and across my neck.

Shit.

“Drive faster,” I order my best friend.

He calls ahead. It’s a blur of quick, choppy conversation that I can’t seem to hold onto. I tell him what’s happening, her medical history, and he relays it. Otherwise, I just stare down at Aurora. Checking that her eyes are still open—they are, and she blinks slowly. She coughs again, a pink foamy spray on her lips.

That’s a problem with her lungs, right?
