I slide out of the truck, landing on wobbly legs. Knox is there a second later, brushing my hair off my shoulder and kissing my neck.

“You’re in a mood.” I tip my head to the side.

“You stayed.”

“You were my ride home.”

“You could’ve ordered a car,” he replies. “But you stayed.”

“I wanted to watch you suffer.”

He pauses. “Me, too.”

I don’t know if he means me watching him or him watching me. But I don’t get a chance to ask, because he moves past me and trails Jacob into the diner.

I sigh, straighten my shoulders, and follow.

Knox orders everything off the menu.

Melody Cameron, Jacob’s old professor turned obsession turned love of his life, sits in the booth with Jacob. Her light-brown hair is caught up in a bun on top of her head, and her dark-rimmed glasses are perched on her nose. She’s wearing red lipstick, a black Titans sweatshirt, and jeans.

She’s dressed down compared to our last brief meeting at the charity gala.

“I’ve read your book,” she confides to me.

“Oh?”

She glances at Knox, who’s still chatting with the waitress. Customizing everything, or something. I don’t know—and either way, I’m trying to ignore him because it’s embarrassing to be that picky.

“Yeah, well, he asked me to.”

My brow automatically furrows. “Knox did?”

She smiles. “It was kind of adorable. And very cloak-and-dagger, you know? He didn’t want me to know why he wanted me to read it, and then he asked my opinion on it?—”

I stop her with a raised hand. “I get a lot of backlash on that book. Reviews to my face aren’t really my thing…”

“No, Aurora.” She grabs my hand and squeezes my fingers. “It was fantastic.”

“Oh.” I narrow my eyes. “Did he pay you to say that?”

“It’s my honest opinion.”

“You’re out ofsausage?” Knox exclaims to the waitress. “How? What? We have a very important, secret mission we’re trying to carry out here, Cathy. We’re trying to take down a fraudulent betting ring?—”

“Okay, enough.” I roll my eyes and pat his hand. “Poor guy, we took him out of the mental hospital across town to see the hockey game. And now he thinks he’s a player and a spy.”

The waitress blinks at me, then laughs nervously. “So, do you want all the food he ordered, or…?”

“Yes, of course,” Knox snaps. “We’re hungry. We’re spies.”

Jesus.

She nods and hurries away, and I shake my head.

“You’re not helping our case here, babe.”

He snorts. “Yeah, right. I didn’t tell her anything?—”
