“You would’ve told her everything,” Jacob points out. “I mean, it’s your track record.”

“And we’re not actually spies,” I point out.

Melody chuckles. She doesn’t seem put off by his behavior, which is just weird in and of itself. I want to know more about her. She’s kind of intriguing. There’s paint in her nail beds, and Jacob keeps his hand on her thigh.

It makes my throat go all tight.

I already got the story of how they met. She was his professor, he was failing her class. Kind of cute, in a way. And then she was taken by her ex-husband, Jacob thought she ran away… cue years of misery on both their parts.

Until she showed back up with no memory.

We keep the chat light until the waitress returns. I didn’t even order food—I was a little distracted—but the waitressfills the tablewith plates. So many plates. We have to push our drinks all the way to the side, and we stare as literally everything on the menu is set down in front of us.

Except the sausage.

I take a bite of bacon. It’s extra crisp, just the way I like it, and Knox elbows me.

“You did not remember how I like my bacon,” I mutter under my breath.

“Yes, I did.”

“And you tape your stick the way I used to.”

“Maybe I do that, too.”

“You’re evil,” I snap.

“You’re not so saintly yourself, sunshine.”

Ugh.

Still.

Pancakes with different fillings, waffles, French toast, every kind of egg imaginable. Benedict, fried, scrambled… okay, maybe I’m not up on all my egg terminology. But it’s a lot. I pick a plate at random and scoop some scrambled egg onto it, next to the waffles and bacon. Ketchup on the egg, maple syrup on the waffles. Nothing touching my nearly burnt bacon.

Coffee with just a dash of cream and a spoonful of sugar.

It’s a good breakfast for it being almost midnight.

“Have you met the other girls, Aurora?” Melody asks. She picks at an omelet. “We’re all going to the game on Tuesday, and Willow mentioned she invited you.”

“Yeah, she sent me the suite pass.”

Knox drops his fork.

I glance over at him, frowning. “What?”

“When did you talk to Willow?”

“The other day…” I narrow my eyes.

Then it dawns on me that I didn’t tell him about my conversation with his brother. Because why would I tell him about that?

I tap my chin and pretend to ponder it. “Hmm, is this because you still think I slept with Miles?”

Melody chokes.

“How did you get her number if you didn’t talk to my brother?” Knox faces me fully. “Were you hoping to undermine me even further?”
