“I am so sorry, Sebastian,” she replied, holding my hand across the table.

I nodded, allowing her to misunderstand the reason for the pain in my eyes. The waiter began to serve our food and she let go, breaking our connection. Even if I had been conscious about her wearing a mask earlier, I no longer felt it. Every fiber in my being told me that she was for me, and nothing about her was a lie. The sorrow in her gaze was real, and her empathy was certainly not a façade.

“Don’t be.” I smiled, needing to lighten the mood, and began to eat.

“So, is this where you bring all the women you pick up at the bar?”

Her question came so abruptly that I nearly choked on my food. I looked at her and smiled before laughter overtook me. I could see the glitter in her eyes, which was enough to tell me that she was not serious. But there must have been some truth to her question, and I wanted to tell her the truth. I had never done anything like that. I worked; I didn't date. Her eyes sparkled at me, and it was as if she knew there had been no other women. Noone had gotten this close. I had not been this attracted to anyone else.

“Do you really believe that I pick up women at the bar every night?” I asked, looking straight into her eyes as her expression turned serious.

“I don’t think so, no.”

“Good, because I don’t. You are the first woman I have had lunch with in years. The first woman I’ve been romantically interested in. I have never felt this way, Alexandra.”

“You’re romantically interested in me?” she asked, her eyes widening.

“Why else do you think I am unable to take my eyes off of you?” I chuckled at her obvious surprise.

“I don’t know,” she shook her head as if trying to clear her thoughts. “I never imagined someone like you would be interested in me.”

“You’re right. You’re far too good for me,” I replied honestly. If she discovered the truth about me, she would run the other way. And if she found out what I had done to her before I told her, she would hate me. I knew I had to tell her, but I couldn’t find the courage.

“That’s not what I meant,” she said, a faint blush creeping into her skin.

“I know you might still believe that this is all a game, but it is not. I’m fully invested here, and I wish you would believe that.”

“I do believe that, Sebastian,” she whispered my name, testing it on her tongue.

“Promise?”

“Yes,” she nodded enthusiastically, and my heart felt calmer with her reply.

Before I could say another word, my phone buzzed, and I glanced down at it. Carlos’ name flashed back at me. I knew I had worried him with my call, especially because he had not expected me to tell him that I sensed Alexandra was my soulmate.

The full moon is in ten days. Her transformation could be quicker than you realize. Tell her.

I read his message and knew he was right. I needed to tell her, and I would not find a better moment. Alexandra smiled as I looked at her, and I had never seen someone more beautiful. How can I let her go so soon now that I have finally gotten her?

The image of the man from the security tape ran through my mind. I had a team scouring the surveillance tapes looking for him trailing Alexandra, and they’d found evidence of two men. The threat on her life was coming from all angles, and I was not going to sit by and let her be taken by these men. I knew I couldn’t do that.

“Is everything okay?” she asked. “Why do you look so serious?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine.” I glanced at my phone, trying to push Carlos’ words from my head.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.” I nodded. “Can I ask you something, Alexandra?”

“Anything,” she said, her eyes earnest.

“Would you like to come to my private island for a week? Just us?”

Her eyes widened at my words, taking in the magnanimity of the question. I knew I was asking her to trust me, and she just might not be ready. I needed to take her away. I wanted to remove the eyes of everything and everyone from us, especially knowing that she was running from something. I wanted to protect her as much as I could, and I knew I could control the island.

“Are you serious?”

“I am.” I nodded with longing apparent in my eyes.
