“I have never talked about my life and childhood with anyone. There’s a reason the media calls me ‘the mysterious Sebastian Huntington.’ I paid a lot of money to hide my past from the world. That’s how I have always preferred it,” I explained.

The guilt ate away at me with every passing day as I continued to hide the truth from her. I had to inform her of the impending transformation. Carlos messaged me every day with concern for Alexandra, but I lacked the courage to tell him that I hadn’t. Today was our last day on the island. I had already postponed the departure by two days, and I didn’t want to ruin the time we had left. The bad news would have to wait.

“I know this,” she whispered, stroking my forehead lightly. “But I still would like to know more about you.”

“Alright,” I nodded. If there was someone I could tell, it was her. “I used to live in a small town with my parents, but when I was around ten, our town came under attack and almost everyone was killed, including my parents. I had no choice but to run away, and I came to Chicago. I have been working and studying ever since; Carlos took me under his care. He helped me througha lot of things, and I love and respect him more than anyone in the world. That’s all.”

My heart thumped louder than ever as I told her about myself. It almost felt like a crime. As if I was not supposed to reveal my hidden pain. I continued to look at her, and her eyes were softer than ever.

“So, your childhood was no better than mine. You spent it without your parents and constantly buried under the weight of responsibility,” she whispered, and I smiled at her. Alexandra was smart and empathetic, and I could sense that her feelings for me had grown as strong as mine had. Our bond is so strong now that I can feel her heightened intuition in my mind, and I’m sure she can feel mine.

“That was what helped me stay afloat.”

“But you have been burdened with worries all your life. Don’t you want to rest sometimes? Maybe delegate the work and responsibilities?” she asked with concern.

“I do,” I said honestly. “Being here with you was just that for me. I did not work for a single second.”

“Don’t lie to me, Sebastian.” She smiled. “I heard you on calls multiple times when you thought I was asleep. You have been working.”

“I can’t abandon my business and the people who work for me. I know you are advocating for me to take a break but being beside you made me feel calmer than I have felt in ages, my love.I promise. Nothing compares to your company,” I confessed honestly.

“You flatter me.”

“I only speak the truth. I’m all yours Bright Eyes.” Alexandra sighed and placed her head on my chest, both of us staying silent in the moment.

I’m not ready to let go of this time just yet. The plane is waiting for us, and it’s almost time to head back, but leaving the island would mean stepping back into reality, and I would be plagued with questions. She still hadn’t told me anything about who she was running from, and I know I can’t ask her. Although, my need to protect her only grew with time.

“Sir?” Alexandra got up as a server approached, allowing me to turn and look at him.

“Yes?”

“Your bags are packed and the plane is ready to take you home,” he informed us, and I nodded. Why does it have to end?I looked at Alexandra, and her expression mirrors mine. The fact that she was also upset about leaving gave me comfort. I sensed she felt as intensely about me as I felt about her. I would give her as much time as she needed to become accustomed to these emotions.

I stood, extending my hand to her as we walked back to the house, lost in our thoughts. As we entered, her phone rang, and she immediately fetched it from her bag. In the past few days, whenever her phone rang or she got a message, she looked extremely worried as if the explanation of all her problems was hiding inside the little black box, and it was winning her attention. Despite my suspicion that she would not be able to handle this, I had not looked into it once.

“I’ll be back,” she said, walking into the adjoining room as I surveyed the bags placed outside. I knew it was unethical to listen in on her conversation, but I couldn’t contain my curiosity and quietly go after her. Her back was turned away from me, and I knew she was unaware of my presence. Her wolf senses had not developed enough that she would understand what she was giving away without her words.

“Yes., I will leave town as soon as we get back. I know I have no other choice.” The break in her voice was enough to tell me that she was crying, and every part of me tensed.

She’s leaving town?

I knew she had planned to leave before the trip, but now that we had this connection, I had expected her to stay. I needed her to stay. How could she even think about running away? She had to know I would protect her from anything and everything. The tension radiating from her body had me understanding that the decision she made wasn’t an easy one. If she was still willing to leave, her situation must be worse than I thought.

“No, I won’t tell him anything. I’ll just disappear,” she whispered. She was not even planning to say goodbye.

Which was a wise decision because she must know that I would never let her leave, even if she had the most sensible reason in the world.

When will you trust me enough to tell me the truth, Alexandra?

“I’ll call you once I reach—” I turned around, realizing she was ending the conversation, and soundlessly returned to the main hall where our luggage was waiting. Shortly after, Alexandra came back. I looked at her, keeping my expression as nonchalant as possible even though every part of my body wanted to hold her and ask her to tell me what was wrong.

“Are you okay?” I asked instead, and she smiled.

“Perfect. Should we get going?” her red-rimmed eyes contradicted her response.

“Yes.” I slid my hand across her waist, and she moved in closer, making me feel whole. I wondered how she could leave me after everything we shared. After the bond that has grown with time. I don’t know how I will stop her from pushing me away.

However, she might have chosen not to stay for very different reasons if I had found the strength to tell her the truth. Time was running out, and she deserved to know.
