As soon as I stepped foot outside the hotel, the darkness of the night looked so intimidating and every hair on my body stood on end. I had been so distracted by Sebastian that I had forgotten the real problem. Fear and adrenaline flooded my body as every sense screamed danger. Something was wrong.

“I can’t go back,” I said to myself, taking tentative steps toward the road and looking over my shoulder frantically. I felt the eyes on me with a heavy weight. I needed to get to safety, but I couldn’t go back to the hotel. Sebastian was there, and I couldn’t face him.

I kept walking, the heavy feeling growing stronger with every step. I turned the corner to run, but a familiar pair of green eyes halted me mid-step. He wore a cruel smile.

He found me.Before I could shout or move to run, a sharp pinch on my neck caused my legs to buckle. As my vision darkened, I felt rough hands wrap around me before I fell to the ground.

Chapter twelve

Sebastian

“You’re certain this is correct?” I asked Lark as we drove toward the address my hacking team had found for Phoebe's house. Lark was my driver and bodyguard, a man I trusted with my life. It was not as if I needed protection but having Lark around made things easier.

“Yes, Mr. Huntington,” he nodded calmly, continuing to drive.

Alexandra ran away, and I lost my mate.

I couldn’t believe it. It was all my fault. I was a coward for not telling her earlier. I was an idiot to just let her run out of the hotel building like that. I should have followed her. The pain and fear in the deep blue shards of her eyes shook me. The disappointment in my mate's face caused me to go dormant, and I wallowed in self-pity. But when I realized that she was running from someone, the fact that she asked me not to come after herwas not enough to keep me in the room. I should have followed her right away.

I had messed up, so I skipped the elevator and took the stairs two at a time. The burn in my legs fueled the concern I felt for Alexandra. I would bring her back and protect her. I just had to catch up to her… but all I found was a trail that went cold two blocks away. She had disappeared so completely that my hackers were unable to find her on any of the city’s traffic cams. Had we mated completely, I could have traced her through our bond, but that was not an option right now.

“Alright,” I growled, still on edge.

I used all my resources to compile a file with all the information available on Alexandra, but I couldn't bring myself to spy on my mate. I wanted to get her personal information from her mouth and with her story. I convinced myself that she had taken a car to the airport and come to Phoebe’s house. She was the last person Alexandra spoke to on the phone. Phoebe had to be harboring Alexandra, and this was all just a big mix-up.

“You still haven’t touched the files, Mr. Huntington. I thought you would read them on the plane,” Lark said, motioning to the files where every detail about Alexandra was compiled for me.

“I know,” I sighed. “I’m not ready yet. I need to meet Phoebe first.”

When I learned that Phoebe lived in New York, I immediately flew there. If there was someone who could tell me the entire story and Alexandra’s whereabouts, it was her. I knew Alexandragave Phoebe her location, and I needed whatever help I could get.

“We’re here,” Lark said, stopping the town car in front of a small house on a quiet street. I don’t know if this was where Alexandra spent her childhood, but I could almost see her living there.

Where are you, my Mate?

“Wait here for me.” I stepped out of the car and rang the doorbell, my anticipation building.

Please let her be here,I prayed to no one in particular. I had been in rooms filled with powerful men wanting to make money off each other, but I now knew true fear, panic, and anxious anticipation. Alexandra was more important than all my wealth. I would follow her to the ends of the earth.

A petite woman of about Alexandra’s height opened the door, her brown eyes confused as she looked at me. She was dressed comfortably and casually, clearly in for the rest of the night. I knew she was Phoebe because my team had provided me with her picture.

“Yes?” she asked, curious and confused.

“Phoebe, I’m Sebastian Huntington. Where’s Alexandra?” I wasted no time getting to the point and Phoebe’s eyes widened in surprise. She knew about me through Alexandra but probably hadn’t expected me to show up on her doorstep.

“What are you doing here?” she said, starting to close the door.

“I’m looking for Alexandra.” I pleaded, leaning on the door to keep it open. “She disappeared, and the only person she shares her location with is you. She told me you are her only family. You must know where she is.”

“Keep your voice down!” she whispered angrily, looking around the deserted street as if afraid someone would hear. “Come inside.”

I walked inside the brightly lit house, and she closed the door behind us. I followed her to a cozily decorated living room, and I could see Alexandra sitting here with her best friend, talking about life. My wolf cried out for the loss of my mate.

I picture Alexandra everywhere.I wished desperately that she would be sitting on the couch waiting for me to come in and take her home.

“Now what do you mean, where is Alexandra? She was supposed to be in Chicago with you.”

“She isn’t. I think she told you she was planning to leave. You are the last person she talked to yesterday,” I replied, my worry growing. Did Phoebe also not know where Alexandra was? Or was she lying?
