“So, is he the one who put the shorts on me then?” I asked.

“I had been hoping that was you,” I said, with wicked thoughts running through my mind.

She blushed a deeper red, and it was so cute and made her look angelic.

Then she stunned me by saying, “If I ever take your clothes off, it won’t be to put others back on and definitely not when you’re unconscious. You will be fully awake and begging me to!”

And just like that, I caught a glimpse of her inner devil!

The combination of her angelic looks and her inner devil set me on fire, and I groaned and squirmed as the semi-hard-on I had been sporting jerked in response.

“I just might hold you to that, Little Miss Hot Mess!” I said, chuckling when she squirmed in embarrassment.

“So, your turn to talk!” she said, sounding all prim again. I loved the contradiction in her.

I took a sip of the water she held for me while I tried to decide what to say.

“Someone jumped me on the way to a meeting,” I said, deciding to be as vague as possible.

“Who were they, and why were they asking about a lab?” she asked.

I looked away from her. Shit, she heard them questioning me about the lab; damn, she hadn’t said that.

Still, I stuck to the story I’d started, “I have no idea, a case of mistaken identity probably.”

“So, you are telling me you didn’t know these guys or anything about a lab?” I could tell she was a bit suspicious now.

“That’s what I’m saying, yes,” I confirmed, hoping she would let it drop.

I didn’t know why, but I didn’t like lying to her. It was better for her that I didn’t drag her into my family’s business any more than I had already. Nevertheless, it felt wrong.

I wanted to tell her everything, which was out of character for me. I was secretive by nature but also through necessity. I wanted to tell her everything, but I wouldn’t. I didn’t know her. I couldn’t trust a stranger with my family secrets. Yet somehow, she didn’t feel like a stranger to me. It was odd. That shocked me, so I bit my tongue before I could blurt out the truth.

“Uh huh!” obviously, she was not at all convinced.

“Well, now you are awake and can give a statement. Do you want me to call the police?” Gracie asked, sounding hesitant.

“No!” I said quickly. I couldn’t help but notice how her body relaxed a bit at that.

“I’m from a prominent family, as you’ve probably guessed, and this will cause publicity that we don’t need. My family and I will deal with it privately. Plus, it is a bit embarrassing that I found myself in such a position,” I added on for good measure, hoping she would think that was the reason I didn’t want police involvement and nothing else. I don’t think she did, though.

“These were bad guys, so you shouldn’t feel bad about them jumping you. I mean, it is not something you would expect,” she consoled me, obviously deciding not to call me out on my lies, which I was sure she could see right through.

She was observant, intelligent, and super sexy, with just a little bit of sass that had me intrigued. I really had to see this girl again.

“Well, I’m sure it isn’t really any of my business, and since I didn’t call the police at the time and went all vigilante on their asses, I guess sticking with the no police idea suits me too,” she said with a nervous smile.

Yep, she definitely knew there was more to the story than I was telling her. I just hoped it wasn’t going to scare her off. Nah, I wouldn’t let it! It took me a week to find her again, and I wasn’t letting her get away from me that easily. I would just have to pour on some more charm.

“So, is there someone I can call to come collect you? Or can I drive you somewhere?” she hurried on, stating, “You didn’t have a jacket or phone when I rescued you, so I couldn’t look for any contacts then.”

I guessed the bastards must have smashed my phone at the scene, so we couldn’t be tracked.

“May I borrow your phone, and I’ll call someone?” I asked because I really did need to let my family know where I was and that I was safe. They were liable to be frantic by now.

“Oh, you might want to get them to bring you some more clothes, too; yours were covered in blood. I’ll give you some privacy to make your call,” Gracie said, handing me her mobile and heading for the door.

“Will do, and Gracie?” I called after her, “Thanks for rescuing me and thanks for this,” I waved her phone at her.
