He looks up slowly, his eyes narrowing at me. “What are you talking about?”

“She knew your name. How?”

“It’s in her best interest to know the police in her area,” he shrugs.

“If that was the case, she’d know you’re the captain. She called you detective.”

He sighs as though annoyed by this conversation. “What is your point, Harvey?”

“My point is, how did she know who you are?”

“Maybe I brought her in back when I was a detective.” He’s back to looking at his screen like he is ignoring the conversation.

“You explicitly told me she’d never even stepped foot in a police station before. And you haven’t been a detective for twelve years, Gary. You’re telling me you pulled her in here when she was sixteen?”

“What’s this all about, Campos?” His voice becomes sharp, his posture defensive.

“What evidence did you have that she was involved in an arson attack, Gary? And why were you so sure I was sleeping with her?”

“Harv—”

“You bugged my phone.” I don’t ask him, I already know the answer, the flare of his nostrils and the venom in his stare. “You’ve been spying on me.”

“You were on an assignment, it was my job to monitor you,” he says coolly.

“Without my knowledge? And I’m starting to think this assignment was completely unofficial. Did the Chief of Police even know about it?”

He doesn’t answer, just leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms over his round belly. I see it now. I see my mentor disappear, my friend and colleague nowhere to be seen, and in his place is a picture of fucking evil that makes me sick to my stomach. My head starts nodding in resignation, my lips turneddown in the corners. I drop my gaze to that fucking burrito.I can still smell the fast food on him.

“It was you, wasn’t it?”

He just stares at me, disgust written over his face.

“Wasn’t it?” I shout. Lowering my voice to spit the words at him like a bad taste I’m trying to get out of my mouth, I say, “Youwere friends with Stanley Wolfe. You were onhispayroll. You repeatedlyrapedhis teenage daughter over a matter of years.” When he still says nothing, I continue, my anger roiling through my body like lava. “How many have there been, Gary? How many children have you molested and abused? Were you aware of the property on George Street and what they were doing there? Were you a part of it?”

That’s when I see it, it’s only slight and lasts only a second, but his lips pull into a small smirk and I see red. Lunging across the office, I pull him up by his shirt, his weight teetering on the tips of his toes to bring us eye to eye. I can smell it then, the grease and body odour that she must have been assaulted with while he forced himself on her. My knuckles are white where they’re gripping the cheap fabric so hard.

“I fucking trusted you,” I seethe through grit teeth. “I looked up to you and you’re nothing but a disgusting scumbag.”

“Careful Harvey, you’re dangerously close to being in a world of trouble,” he strains, his face going red as he struggles against my hold.

Resolve hits me like a wave in a storm. “I’m going to kill you.”

That small smile plays on his lips again before he yells. “Gibson!”

The uni appears in the office doorway, his eyes widening in surprise as he takes in the sight of the two of us. I’m still holding Gary too high for him to comfortably find his footing, our faces an inch apart, both of us snarling like wild animals.

“E-everything okay, Cap?” Gibson stutters.

“Arrest Detective Campos,” the man in front of me orders, without taking his eyes off me.

“On what charge?” I spit.

“Let’s start with assaulting a police officer. That’s before we look into being an accessory to murder, drug charges, and solicitation.” His smile grows, sending my stomach bottoming out. “I have enough evidence to put you and your girlfriend away for a very long time, Campos.”

“Sir?” Gibson shuffles in nervously.

“You heard me, arrest him. Put him in a holding cell until I get back.”
