My crappy apartment in the semi-dodgy area of town isn’t exactly a palace, but I’m going to miss it. I’m especially going to miss the disproportionately large shower with unbeatable water pressure and three jet settings. It’s six in the morning and I hold my face under the spray to wake myself up. After leaving the Wolfe residence late last night, it feels like hell dragging my arse out of bed but I’ve got to make a good impression on my first day, I suppose.

My mind is stuck on my new boss as I lather up my body. Annika Wolfe is not what I imagined. She’s beautiful and unattainable, completely put together both aesthetically and internally. Her demeanour is cold, certainly, but it’s not the heartless ice queen I had been told about. There’s something there, a vulnerability she’s trying desperately to hide, but my cop’s eye sees through the veil of indifference she wears. I know she has a soft spot somewhere. That will be how I succeed in my mission. I will find her weakness, exploit it, and win back my job at the station. That’s the plan. I will stick to the plan.

But something is niggling in the back of my resolve, something doubtful that makes me believe that this won’t be as simple as it sounds. That Annika isn’t as simple as we thought. Her face comes back into my mind, those thick lips, and sharp cheekbones. Her eyes burn bright blue into my subconscious as my hand drifts from my stomach down. That flare of angry disgust that she gave me on multiple occasions yesterday has my chest constricting and my fist wraps around my stiffening cock.Detective. The way her voice carries so much distain over my title but still husks over the syllables has me tugging gently on my dick, squeezing the base, and twisting over the head. White-blonde hair falling past creamy shoulders, lips painted pink to match pointed nails, the smell of juniper and berries.Fuck.

I catch myself before painting the tiles, slapping both palms against the wall. What am I doing?I cannot be thinking of Annika Wolfe as anything but a target, a means to an end. She is a criminal. The worst of the worst, sitting on her throne built from the pain and suffering of others. She stands for everything I want to purge this city of. She is the reason I became a police officer, and I will not be distracted by a pretty pussy.

I turn the shower to the coldest setting, finishing up in a hurry and a foul mood, edging myself has never been a kink of mine. I’m dressed within ten minutes and out the door with the keys to a brand-new black Land Rover in hand. My place is a twenty-minute drive to the Wolf mansion, and I use that time to school myself into a calm and easy-going state. My relaxed approach yesterday seemed to rile Annika and I kind of enjoyed it. The guard at the gate bends to look at me through the driver’s side window, he’s a different one to the guy yesterday, older and grouchy looking.

“You the new guy?” he croaks, his voice filtered by years of smoking.

“Guilty.” I give him my most charming smile and he nods, giving me a disapproving once over.

“You got ID on you, cop?”

I don’t let the smile drop from my face as I pull my wallet out of my pocket and give him my licence. He studies it for a moment before turning away from me and speaking into a radio clipped at his shoulder. “You’re good to go,” he says, handing back my licence and stepping into the booth to open the gate.

“Thanks, have a great day,” I call after him with a wave and chuckle to myself when he just grunts in response.

I park the Rover outside the garage because it doesn’t open automatically for me as it did for Stuart last night and head to the front door, ringing the doorbell and waiting with jittery anticipation for this day to start. Stuart opens the door with a frown and a mug of coffee in his hand.

“Remind me to ask Diamond to get you a key,” he says by way of greeting.

“Ask Diamond to get me a key,” I tell him.

He looks at me unimpressed. “Wise arse.”

I chuckle and follow him through to the kitchen where there are a few more people than there were last night. At the large island sits a large black man wearing grey slacks and a white shirt with the collar undone. He has a large diamond stud in one ear, a shaved head, and he is giving a bright and dazzling smile to a petite woman in her early to mid-twenties stood at the fridge. She has reddish brown hair piled high on top of her head and a much shyer smile, and wearing a thick brown cardigan which seems excessive for the warmth of the house. She looks up when we walk in and looks between me and Stuart. When he sees her line of vision, the guy stares at us too.

“Lee, Guinevere, this is Javier.” Stuart gestures to me.

“Harvey, please.” I smile at them and give a friendly wave.

“Man, I’ve been eager to meet you.” The guy stands and towers over both me and Stuart. He has a warm and friendly smile as he holds out his hand in greeting.

“Is that so?” I ask, shaking his hand with a firm grip.

“Fuck yeah, the boss hires an ex-cop as her personal security, I gotta meet the man.” He chuckles and shoves his hands in his pockets.

“Well, I hope I’m all kinds of surprising,” I say mirroring his stance.

“You don’t give off arsehole vibes so, so far you’re achieving that.” He smirks.

So, everybody hates cops. Figures. Turning to the woman, I turn on the charm. “Guinevere? Such a lovely name.” I hold my hand out for her and she looks at it hesitantly for a beat before giving me a meagre shake.

“Nice to meet you.” Her voice is soft, and she doesn’t meet my eye. Sensing her uncertainty, I step back to put some distance between us, hoping to make her more comfortable. A sickening thought washes over me that she is timid and shy because she is mistreated by her boss.Could Annika be the one putting this poor woman in this state?

“Miss White is the housekeeper and keeps us all well fed with her delicious cooking,” Stuart says, giving the blushing Miss White a warm smile. “And Lee is head of security here at the house.”

“Ah, so you and I will be working close together,” I summarise, looking to Lee.

“Yeah.” He nods. “Strictly speaking, you shouldn’t be needed anytime the boss is here, we can’t get rid of Stuart because the coffee’s good and he has an unhealthy addiction to Guin’s shortbread biscuits.”

Stuart shrugs taking another sip of his coffee. “Don’t forget the all the mediocre company and disrespectful quips.”

Lee laughs and I can’t help my smile at their back and forth. “So anyway, what I’m saying is, once Miss Wolfe is back home, you’re technically off the clock until she needs to leave again.”

I nod. “You’re here twenty-four-seven?”
