I wake with a gasp.

“Belle! Are you ok?”

I look up to see Kai staring at me, concern etched into his perfect face. His perfectly alive face. Before he has a chance to say anything else, I fling myself into his arms, breathing in his scent and listening to the beat of his heart.

“It felt so real,” I whisper. Kai’s warm arms are wrapped around me, calming my racing heart and slowing my breathing.

“Mo chridhe, it’s ok. It was a nightmare,” Kai murmurs into my hair. We’re in my bedroom at Cal’s house. Kai refused to let me out of his sight once we landed, and Cal didn’t want me out of his either.

“Midnight Macaroni?” Cal yells from the other side of my door.

“Yes, please!” I yell back.

Kai snickers as he tries to pull away. I’m clinging to him too hard to let him.

“I’ve got you, baby. He can’t get to you here.”

“I don’t usually have nightmares when you’re next to me,” I whisper into his chest. I feel him flinch and pull away so I can look at him.

“I was downstairs with Cal. He texted me that the contract was in his email, and we were reading it over.” Kai looks guilty, like he was cheating on a test and not just downstairs. I hate I make him feel that way. That he feels like he needs to be with me at all times or I’ll break.

And isn’t that the truth? He was a floor away, and I woke up screaming and crying like an infant.

“Come on, let’s go downstairs before Cal comes back up here to get us,” I say, climbing out of bed and putting my hand out for Kai. He smiles and grabs it, probably thinking I’m letting the nightmare roll off me like I had been doing.

But I can’t. Not this time. I need time to figure out what I want to do, but dream or not, it was too real. Kai is in danger from just being near me. And why was Ezra there? Was I the cause of his disappearance somehow?

“Stop overthinking. You said Brad is a coward and won’t come near you when there are other men. Has that changed?” Kai asks, reading my thoughts.

“I doubt it.” I don’t even try to deny what I was thinking about. He would know I was lying. “But I can’t live my life worrying I’m in danger or that you are for being with me.”

“We’ve been home for less than a day, Belle. We’re going to figure this out. I promise.” Kai sits on the couchand pulls me down onto his lap. “There’s nothing I won’t do to make sure you’re safe.”

That’s what I’m worried about.

“It smells so good in here!”

Kai comes around the corner to meet me at the front door of his house. He told me to just let myself in, and I did. Cal dropped me off, and I wasn’t risking him coming in and interrupting our date night.

His house is the opposite color scheme of Mav’s. Apparently, they thought it would be funny. Which I guess it may have been at first, but they both need to add some color. I won’t lie, though. I kind of love the black floors.

“Thanks, baby,” Kai says with a lazy smile before he pulls me into him for a sweet kiss. Taking my hand in his, he leads me into his spacious kitchen. Like the rest of his house, it’s black and white. Black floors and cabinets with white walls and countertops. Even the appliances are black.

“What did you make?” I ask him, taking in the colorful assortment of veggies on the counter.

“Buffalo chicken mac and cheese is in the oven. I was just about to make a salad to go with it.”

“My favorite!” I exclaim, bouncing on my toes.

Kai just chuckles and pulls me into his side, kissing the top of my head.

“I know,” he whispers, putting his finger on my chin and titling my face towards him. He captures my lips with his. The kiss is slow at first, soft. It soon turns hungry, both of us wanting todevour the other.

“Kai…” I pant breathlessly into his mouth.

“I know, mo chridhe,” he says quietly before sealing his lips over mine again.

“I don’t want to wait,” I manage to mumble between kisses.
