Ansel didn’t look at her again, and completely ignored her as he made the rounds, talking to his employees. It stung to be there and have him completely ignore her. In fact, she realized, she couldn’t stand it.
“Dad,” she said. “I think I’m going to head out. I’ll get an uber to the ferry and Lozen said she would pick me up. I left my car with her.”
“Really? Saber, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore you.”
Saber smiled.
“Dad, it’s fine, I just don’t feel good. But you have fun.”
“Be safe.”
“Will do.”
She got her coat, and texted Lozen as she headed to the elevator. As she stepped in, someone reached from behind her to grab the door.
“Mind if I ride down with you?”
“Sure,” she said, not even looking at him.
“You’re leaving early?”
“Sorry, your party is boring.”
He laughed his quiet laugh.
“Saber, I needed to ask you something, but it feels like kind of a ridiculous question.”
“What?”
“Someone told me…”
He trailed off and seemed to collect himself.
“Someone told me that you…stakeda vampire. That couldn’t possibly be true, could it?”
Saber looked at him, and the way he looked at her, with those brilliant, lit-ember eyes, made her hair stand on end. She wondered if she was in danger.
“They’re killing kids at my school, Ansel.”
“Answer my question,” he said. “Did you do it?”
“Ugh,” she said, trying to sound casual. “Yes.”
The elevator dinged and the door opened.
He pressed the door close button then another one, sending the elevator to a different floor, much,muchhigher up. Saber felt her heart thump. Why was he taking her there? To get revenge on behalf of all vampires?
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
There was anger in his voice.
“I didn’t know how you would react.”
“I’m much more angry that youdidn’t tell me,” he said, his voice a low growl.
“I don’t owe you that,” Saber said. “I don’t owe you explanations. You don’t report to me whenyoukill people.”
“No,” he said. “But I’m trying to keep you safe, and you promised you wouldn’t put yourself in danger.”
