“I’m pretty tired,” she said, wishing Lozen was there.

She was asleep before eleven.

Finally, the day before school started, Mia called. They needed to meet, she insisted.

She had found other vampires.

It was a Sunday afternoon, January second, and icy cold out. Saber knew that Seattle didn’t get as cold as, say, New England, but she’d never been to New England and as far as she cared, thirty-five degrees and gray was just about the worst weather she had ever experienced. She’d asked Lozen if she wanted a ride, but Lozen had apparently gone with Mia, news that surprised and confused her. She parked on the street and trudged up to Doug’s house since she saw Elijah’s car parked in the driveway.

Finally, they were all gathered around the table again. There was a fire crackling in the fireplace, which Saber was grateful for, and a kettle on for tea.

“How did you find them?” Doug asked, his hand wrapped around a hot mug.

Mia breathed and looked down at her hands on the table.

“I got some help,” she said, and then looked at Lozen, who met her gaze then looked back at her own tea.

“Help from your coven?” Saber asked.

Mia nodded.

“I did some very…oldmagic,” she said. “I didn’t think it would work, but it did.”

She took a deep breath.

“Lozen helped.”

Saber looked at Lozen and felt a stinging feeling. Had she been hiding the fact that she was working with Mia? Had she been on the island without telling her? Why?

“How did you do it?” Elijah asked, his face twisted with skepticism.

Mia sighed and took a sip of her tea.

“You seem reluctant to tell us,” Doug said.

“I am. It’s kind of unbelievable, even for me.”

“We asked ravens to tell us, and they did,” Lozen said flatly.

There was a stunned silence.

“Ravens?” Doug said. “Like metaphorical ravens, or literal…”

“Real, literal ravens, like the bird,” Lozen said. “Mia told me that magic like that existed, but only certain kinds of witches could use it. I tried it. It worked.”

Saber stared at Lozen in stunned silence.

“Huh,” Doug said, looking amused, “and what did they tell you?”

“There are a few houses. I have a list. I know where Derek is, but not the other one, the woman.”

Saber’s heart thudded at the thought of Mia and Lozen finding out about Ansel. Maybe they already had and that’s whytheywere keeping secrets fromher.

“How do they know?”

Saber felt silly asking the question.

“Animals are, as it turns out, very, veryaware of the vampires,” Lozen said matter-of-factly. Saber noticed she blushed a little when she said it. “To them it’s very obvious where they live and who they are, I guess.”
