“Precisely.”

“We’ll be careful.”

In Ansel’s living room later that night, Saber thought about what it might be like to be in a real relationship with him, if such a thing was even possible. Would they eat dinner together every night, even though Ansel didn’t eat? Would they ever just chill out and watch movies together?

She had to ask.

“Do you ever watch movies?”

Saber was curled up on the couch, a blanket wrapped around her. He set a teacup in front of her, steaming, and looked thoughtful.

“Sure,” he said. “I’ve been really obsessed with them at times. For years I would seeNosferatuandDraculaas often as I could, in silent movie houses.”

“Really?”

He nodded and seemed to be remembering.

The detail seemed absurd to Saber, who couldn’t stop herself from laughing.

Ansel smiled, a rare, actually-amused smile. His whole face would have lit up if vampire’s faces had that ability.

“Sure. I’d lived this double life for hundreds of years, being in a theater in a movie about vampires felt really exciting. The fearand anticipation floating through the air was thrilling. I didn’t think anything would be that exciting again, but humans and the technology they develop are so endlessly surprising.”

Saber smiled at him.

“I’m trying to imagine you in a movie theater a hundred years ago.”

“It was a different time, but the experience of sitting in a darkened theater with other people when the screen flickers to life is pretty universal.”

“What other movies do you like?”

Ansel laughed.

“Nobody’s ever asked me that before,” he said. “Not somebody who knows what I am.”

“Is it a stupid question?”

“No.” He shrugged. “Just funny. I’ve been alive for the entire existence of cinema, so it’s hard to surprise me.The Wizard of Ozsurprised me.”

Saber barked with laughter.

“Sorry, I just imagined you watchingThe Wizard of Oz.”

He laughed.

“I loved it. I lovedBambi. The art was so vivid and beautiful, all those hand-painted plates. I couldn’t get enough. I forget how many times I saw it. I’d go see it right now if I could.”

Now Saber was laughing almost uncontrollably.

“Bambi? About the baby deer?”

“You have to remember, it was such a different time. I’d never seen anything like it, and I’m hard to impress.”

“What else?”

“2001: A Space Odysseywas beautiful.”

“I haven’t seen it. How about movies about the past?”
