“I don’t like historical movies. They never get it right, so they seem really silly. Like people in costumes pretending.”

“Makes sense. Only munchkins, animal cartoons, and science fiction for this ancient, world-weary vampire.”

He smiled at her so warmly she could imagine he was human.

“Most movies are pretty boring. Human problems can seem…”

“Small and petty?”

He shrugged.

“I remember watchingThe Godfatherand thinking ‘None of this matters. They’re all going to die soon anyway.’”

Saber laughed again, but it was quieter.

“I hate feeling like you think of me that way, like I’m just a little blip in your life, just a mortal who will only live a fraction as long as you.”

He looked at her with that steady, impenetrable gaze.

“Saber, you’re eighteen. I’m going to be a blip inyourlife one day. So would any man you were with at this age. That’s what Iwantfor you.”

“Well that’s not very romantic,” she said, smiling a sad smile.

“I’m not a very romantic person. I see things as they are.”

“You don’t think there’s a world where we could be together?”

“We’re together right now. What do you imagine? That I could be yourboyfriend? If I have any feelings for you, it’s a strong need to protect you, and the further away from me you are, the safer you are.”

“I don’t know what I imagine. Could you turn me into a vampire?”

Ansel took a deep breath and sighed. Saber wondered if he needed to breathe, or if he did it out of habit.

“I couldn’t, Saber, no.”

“Why not?”

“One, because you’re too young to make that decision, and two, because people often change when they become vampires, and relationships between vampires can be very intimate, but it wouldn’t be like…this.”

She looked up and saw ravens sitting outside of the window.

“Do you notice the ravens here? I think they watch you.”

“Animals don’t like vampires.”

“Why not?”

“I used to think it was because we’re not natural.”

“You’re not natural?”

“No.”

“Everythingis natural, isn’t it?”

“No, Saber, I’msupernatural.”

Saber laughed.
