“Like,magic?”

Ansel shrugged.

“Animals do like some supernatural creatures though, so who knows.”

“There are others?” Saber was shocked, though she knew she shouldn’t be.

“Yes, of course.”

“Like what?”

“Like your friend.”

“Whatfriend?”

“Your best friend, the girl you’re always with.”

“You meanLozen?” Saber was astonished.

“Yes. I couldn’t tell you what she was, but she’s not entirely human, even if she doesn’t know it herself.”

Saber looked out at the ravens again and thought about it. She knew something was going on with Lozen but didn’t know what.

“What could she be?”

“I don’t know. A werewolf?”

“Werewolves aren’t real.” Saber giggled, thinking it was a joke.

“Neither are vampires.”

“Wait, are you serious? Lozen is a werewolf?”

“I don’t know what she is, but I know she’s not entirely human. It’s part of why she doesn’t like me. The effect vampires have on humans doesn’t work on her. I appear beautiful to you. To Lozen, I’m very…unappealing.”

“You mean you lookdifferentto her?”

“Not much different. It’s almost like the effect hormones have on people’s subconscious. Vampires are…sexyto humans, not to other supernatural beings who only see a freakish living-dead person with a violent nature.”

“To be fair, I think most people are pretty unappealing to Lozen.”

He chuckled. Once again, she found herself charmed by him, by how utterly normal he seemed that night.

“Did you pay her tuition at USC?”

“Oh, did someone do that?”

Saber rolled her eyes, and he smiled, glad to have done a favor.

He looked at her, eyes flickering.

“Don’t you need some sleep, Saber?”

She yawned as if on cue.

“Probably.”

He smiled at her, but his smile was once again cool and detached.
