Saber was hugging her now-always-damp denim jacket to her body, trembling as she trundled from class to class when she heard the voice.

She looked up to see a guy with wavy blond hair worn in a slightly overgrown crew cut. She noticed his bright blue eyes with fine, blond lashes as he smiled down at her, and it made her heart lurch a little. He was impressively, pleasingly tall. She’d seen him at lunch and the gym, but didn’t know his name and didn’t think he was the type of guy who would ever talk to her.

“Only fucking with you,” he said. “But you do look cold. Do you want mine?”

“Your what?”

“My coat.” He laughed, pulling his off.

It was down-lined, forest-green, and already warmed by his body heat. He put it around her shoulders before she couldprotest. She saw he was only in a soft-looking gray T-shirt, a nice-looking watch, gold, glinting on his wrist. The shirt was remarkably tight. He was apparently very proud of his physique. Saber wanted to roll her eyes, but instead she smiled and blushed.

“I’m Rex,” he said. “You can just give me the jacket back after school.”

“Rex?” She couldn’t help but scoff a little.

“Yeah, my parents are ridiculous. My name is Rex. Like the dinosaur.”

“You’re not going to be cold?”

“Nah, I was already getting pretty hot,” he said, and winked at her.

“Thanks,” she managed.

“I’ll find you later,” he said. “Don’t disappear with my jacket.”

“Who’s is that?” Lozen asked, though it sounded more like an accusation, when they walked to Saber’s car after school. She pinched the sleeve of the jacket between her thumb and forefinger.

Saber had gotten in the habit of giving Lozen a ride home every day without even asking her if she needed one, though usually they went and did their homework at Saber’s house first.

“Uh, this guy Rex?”

“RexLarsen? I hate him!”

“I’m starting to think you hate everyone, Lozen.”

“Ugh, come on, just the nameRexitself is sostupid.”

“He didn’t name himself,” Saber said, unlocking her car.

“Ok, but he’s so fucking full of it.”

“He did seem very… confident, I guess?”

Lozen groaned just as Rex sauntered up to them.

“Hey! Here,” Saber said, tugging off the jacket and smiling goofily at Rex. “Thanks a lot.”

She tossed it to him, and he flung it over his shoulder with jaunty ease, then winked at them both. Lozen rolled her eyes so hard Saber had to laugh.

“Lozen, how’s it going?” he said, smiling brighter than ever and apparently enjoying her derision.

“Hi Rex,” Lozen said. “Sorry, we have to get going. Wouldn’t want to make you late for the gym.”

“Wow, Lozen, that’s so thoughtful of you, but the gym is actually open till nine.”

“Ok, well…” Lozen trailed off as she got into Saber’s car.

“Sorry about her,” Saber said. “Thanks again for the jacket.”
