Saber shook her head.

“No, nothing like that. I definitely think there’s credibility to the rumors that those girls are having sex for money and are bringing new girls when they can.”

“And guys. You said Rex was there.”

“Yeah, guys too. There were a bunch of hot, rich, older people.”

“Who do you think drugged you?”

“I honestly don’t know. A couple people handed me drinks, Elise, Rex, that guy Derek. I guess it was probably one of them.”

Lozen gazed at Saber.

“The part that upsets me the most,” she said, “is that someone wanted to keep you from having control.”

Saber nodded and sighed.

“Well,” she said. “I’m alive.”

Lozen smiled.

“And you’re not going to do it again?”

Saber shook her head no but didn’t look Lozen in the eye.

“Saber, ph my god, where did you go?” Laurel asked her as soon as she saw her at school.

It was in between classes, and Saber had the distinct feeling that she’d been sought out. Elise was standing beside her, arms crossed, wearing a very shiny, black, puffy jacket with a Moncler patch.

“Saturday night?” Saber asked, feigning innocence. “I wasn’t feeling well so I just left.”

“Yeah. Where did you go?”

“Home.”

“How did you get home? We were miles from your house!”

“I walked.”

“That was really dangerous, Saber.” Elise had a harsh edge to her voice. “You shouldn’t walk around on the island that late at night. You could have been hit by a car.”

“Well, I wasn’t.”

She shrugged and pushed past them.

“Saber,” Laurel said, her tone much gentler. “I’m sorry, we were really just worried about you. We were, like, freaking out.”

Saber started to walk away, then turned.

“Why did you lie to me about Lozen going ahead of us to the party?”

They stood looking at her.

“And who gave medrugs?”

“What?” Elise said, scoffing. “Nobody gave youdrugs, Saber. You’re being really dramatic.”

“Somebody did. And you lied to me about Lozen. I don’t trust you.”
