“Will Ansel drive me?”

Lia gave her an “Oh, honey” look, and shook her head no.

“He is not available very much during the day.”

Saber nodded.

“But I can call you a driver. Let me know when you’re ready.”

“Saber, what thefuck.”

She had called Lozen after charging her phone. Her dad’s car was gone, and she didn’t see him in the house.

“I have an explanation, and I think it’s a good one, but first I want to make sure you’re alright.”

“Uh, I’m fine. I stayed at the party forever texting you and trying to call you, then I walked home at two in the morning.Three fucking miles!”

“Ok, well, some people told me you went to this other party.”

“I didn’t!”

“Iknow, Lozen, I know. They told me that to trick me, I guess, and then they drugged me. Orsomebodydrugged me. We went to this mansion and—”

“Saber, I’m going to stop you right there. Come pick me up and let’s get some food and you can tell me what happened.”

Saber exhaled.

“Yes. Oh my god. Food. I’m on my way.”

Saber explained, as straightforwardly as she could, the events of the night before, skipping over the part where she made a pass at her dad’s boss. Much ofthatpart of the night she couldn’t remember anyway. Had Ansel said something to her about the parties? She couldn’t recall anything specific.

“I looked for you, tried to call you a million times” Lozen said. “I even tried to sleep there, but that was pointless.”

“I’m sorry,” said Saber.

“What else was I going to do? Hang out at some house? There were barely any people there.”

“I probably would have done the same. I went walking looking for you.”

“So now what?” Lozen said. “What do you think is going on?”

“I have no idea,” Saber said. “I truly, truly have no idea.”

They picked at their food.

“The scary thing,” Saber said, “is that a lot of really weird stuff happened to me last night, and I don’t know if it was all because I was on drugs. Does that make sense?”

“No.”

“Like, at the house, the mansion, I had a feeling that the guy hosting the party could read my mind.”

“Thatdefinitelysounds like drugs.”

“Maybe,” Saber said. “Probably, but it was so fucking weird, Lo.”

“Did you see anything weird going on? Anything…deadly?”

They both laughed a little.
