“Uh, yes,” Saber said. “You’re aware of them?”

“Very much so. And so are the police.”

“They don’t seem to care about them.”

“No, they wouldn’t.”

“Do you already know what I’m about to say, Doug?”

He raised an eyebrow.

“No, Saber, I actually don’t.”

“What do you know about them?”

“That very wealthy people attend and sometimes get driving-while-intoxicated charges on the way home. It’s usually hush-hush, but neighbors and people who follow the police blotterare aware of them. Some people have complained and suggested they’re running some kind of private club.”

“That makes sense.”

“What did you want to tell me about them?”

She took a deep breath. The main reason she wanted to tell Doug first was that she decided it didn’t matter if he thought she was crazy. If he laughed at her, she would just leave.

“Remember last time I saw you, how we joked about there being vampires?”

“Yes…?” His voice was hesitant and curious, maybe a little worried.

“I saw a vampire at that party, Doug. There really are vampires.”

Doug nodded and took a long sip of his tea. Then he leaned back, thinking.

“Interesting.”

Saber and Doug talked for a while. He did not seem to believe her, entirely, nor did he dismiss her claim outright.

“And you brought this to me why, exactly? Whyme? What do you think I can do?”

“Tell me what you think, even if it’s that I’m going crazy.”

“Again, whyme? Why not your parents?”

“Because I think you know something weird is going on, and even if you don’t believe me, you might listen.”

“True.”

“So what do you think?”

“I don’t think you’re crazy,” he said with a sigh. “I believe you saw things that made youthinkyou saw vampires. I believe you really saw those things. I don’t think you’re making it up or delusional.”

“But…”

“But there are other explanations.”

“Like what?”

“Perhaps,” he said, “you’re not crazy, buttheyare. They’re drinking blood, having very exciting parties, maybe even killing the animals, but they’re notreallyvampires. Not in the supernatural sense.”

Saber sat back in her chair and nodded.
