“You said the first time you were on drugs.”

“Yes, but I didn’t take them intentionally.”

“I wouldn’t judge you if you did. My point is, how do you know you weren’t on drugs the second time?”

“I didn’t drink anything.”

“Did you know that in Victorian England, some perceived hauntings were actually caused by carbon monoxide leaks?”

“No,” Saber said. “You think it could be… a carbon monoxide leak?”

“What is more likely to you? That there was some sensory illusion, or that there are some immortal, supernatural beings preying on animals and teenagers on Bainbridge Island?”

Saber nodded and sipped her tea.

“Itfeltsupernatural.”

Doug laughed a little at that.

“I know I must sound stupid to you,” she said, feeling embarrassed.

“No, you don’t at all, but we have to eliminate the possible before we consider the impossible.”

“And after we’ve worked through them, and I still think there are vampires?”

“We come up with an experiment to test our theory. Do you think you might be in danger, Saber?”

She breathed.

“I do, yes.”

He nodded and sipped his tea, then leaned back in his chair.

“I believe that you’re telling your truth. I don’t know that I believe thatyourtruth is theabsolutetruth, but I am willing help you find out.”

“Thank you,” she said. “What if there really are vampires?”

Doug mused for a moment.

“Have you ever readDracula, Saber?”

“No.”

He chuckled, then he sighed.

“If there are vampires, unfortunately we have to kill them.”

School had been excruciating. Everyone wanted to talk about what had happened to Laurel. Elise and Sophie wore sunglasses between classes and didn’t speak to anyone. Police visited classrooms and asked anyone with any information to come forward.

“You have to,” Lozen said to Saber, so she did.

Lozen rode with her to the police station after school.

“She was at a party, but I don’t know the address. The man who owns the house is named Derek.”

The cop who took her statement recognized her. He was the same overnight cop who was there the night she and Lozen had found the woman in the street.
