“Is this close to where you saw the woman lying in the road?”

“Yes, same house.”

“What a coincidence.”

The cop looked at her for a long time.

“I can’t tell if you’re giving me relevant information or looking for attention. I do know that if you were my daughter, I wouldn’t want you out at night as often as you seem to be.”

Saber was taken aback.

“I’m not lying for attention,” she said. “I wouldn’t do that.”

“Laurel’s friends did say she was at the house on Phelps Road, but that she left with them and they drove her home, and the last time they saw her she was walking into her house.”

“Ok.” Saber shrugged. “Maybe her disappearance has nothing to do with the party. I wasn’t there that late. You asked for information, I gave you my information.”

“Did you see anything specific at the party that made you think there was something dangerous going on?”

Saber looked at him, and felt a keen, powerful sense of distrust. She was certain that she couldn’t tell him the truth.

“No,” she said. “Not anything specific.”

He smiled at her.

“I wouldn’t worry about your friend,” he said finally. “Usually when this kind of thing happens, the girl shows up at an older boyfriend’s house a few days after she goes missing.”

Saber laughed.

“Yeah, I doubt it.”

On the way out, she saw Sophie and Elise, but they didn’t acknowledge one another.

“What did you say to the police?” Rex asked, cornering her after school the next day. His voice was a hiss.

Saber was so shocked that for a moment, she didn’t speak. Rex was wearing a hoodie with the hood pulled up around his face. He had dark circles under his eyes, and looked very, very tired.

“Nothing, next to nothing,” she said. “If I told them the truth, they wouldn’t believe me.”

“The truth aboutwhat?” he scoffed.

“Like about you with thatwoman,” she whispered, leaning in. “Isawyou.”

“What woman?”

She thought his tone was mocking, but she wasn’t sure. Maybe he genuinely couldn’t remember.

“The woman upstairs at Derek’s party.”

His eyes narrowed, and she still wasn’t sure if he had any memory of what happened. It was all so confusing.

“I’m not yourboyfriend, Saber,” he said with a sneering laugh.

She rolled her eyes.

“I don’t care that you were with a woman, Rex. She was…”

“What?Whatwas she doing?”
