“No,” she finally said. “Too many people, too many cameras. They wouldn’t take that risk.”

Lozen nodded.

“Then let’s go,” she said. “This isn’t fun.”

They got up to leave and moved through the crowd, which was surging as a new song started.

As they neared the door, Elise appeared out of nowhere and shoulder-checked Saber, surprising considering Elise’s small stature.

“Woah,” Saber said. “What the fuck?”

“What the fuck isright,” Elise said, spinning toward her. “Derek told us what you did.”

Saber’s blood ran cold.

“What?” she said. “What did I do?”

“You knowexactlywhat,” Elise hissed.

Saber shook her head ‘no,’ but she had no idea what Elise knew.

“You had no right to meddle with his house. Now he doesn’t trust us!”

“What?” Saber asked, laughing.

“He told us that you and your weird fucking friends broke into his house. What the fuck is wrong with you? Were you trying to steal from him?”

Saber was stunned and didn’t know what to say. There was something feral in the way Elise looked at her, with her small, round face. She was practically baring her teeth and Saber was reminded of an angry little woodland animal.

“Do you know what he is?” Saber said. “Elise, you must know that he’s evil! Laurel isdeadbecause of him!”

“Laurel knew what she was getting into. She knew the risks,” Elise hissed. “Now he won’t see us. You had norightto interfere.”

Saber stared, stupidly, open-mouthed, at her.

“If you ruined this for us, you’re going to pay,” Elise said, leaning in. “I swear to fucking god.”

“I have to go,” Saber said, and pushed forward.

“What the fuck!” Lozen shouted as they emerged out of the dance and into the parking lot.

“What the fuck indeed,” Saber said, searching her clutch for her car keys.

When they got back to Saber’s house, Lozen casually pilfered a bottle of wine from the pantry and they went upstairs with two plastic cups.

What the fuck was that about?”

Saber shook her head.

“Derek must have told themsomething, but what I can’t figure out is what they know and what theydon’tknow, right?”

“Right, like, they know they’re vampires, don’t they? Do they know about Laurel?”

“It just doesn’t make sense,” Saber said. “That they’d risk their lives and their friend’s lives for a couple designer purses.”

Lozen took a sip of her wine and thought about it.

“I mean people risk their lives every day to use all kinds of drugs. If you think about it like that, it doesn’t really seem that strange.”
