She dipped in the air, her body automatically correcting itself as her warrior magic sang.

The warlock pulled a portal key from his pocket, but before he could activate it, the Fire Wolf tackled him to the ground. The portal key flew from thewarlock’s hand, disappearing into the snow, but the warlock was already back on his feet.

My guards circled him again as the hunter crouched, looking for an opening.

I threw a gust of air at him, creating a Shield at his back to prevent his escape, but the warlock only grinned and then...disappeared.

My eyes grew wide. I spun around, the others doing the same. All of us were on the ground except for my mate. She still hovered in the sky.

Ilara pointed. “There!”

Before I could ask what she saw, she took off, zooming through the air so fast that in a blink she was gone.

“Ilara!” I catapulted into the sky behind her, the earthly air currents picking up as more snow flew around me. Thunder cracked, and a flash of lightning sizzled near a mountain.

In the distance, I could barely make out Ilara’s form since the snow blew so hard, and she was flying so fast.

I wrenched a huge amount of magic from my limbs and created a bubble of air behind us, rocketing my guards and me toward her. Beneath us, the Fire Wolf shifted into a wolf’s form. My guards shot through the sky with me, and the hunter took off in a blast of speed toward where Ilara had flown.

Blood pounded through my veins as determination barreled from Ilara through our bond.Mother Above and Below. She wasn’t going to let the warlock escape. Even if she encountered him alone.

But even though my mate was strong, capable, and just as magical as me, that warlock was the most powerful creature I’d ever encountered. He was older than her, more experienced, more savage, and he was no doubt willing to destroy her using any means necessary.

“We’ll find her!” Haxil called through the wind. “She’ll be okay, Nori.”

The others chimed in as we raced through the air. The terrain turned into a blur beneath us. Nostrils flaring, I tried to scent her on the wind, and a flash of fur caught my attention. The Fire Wolf was running through the trees, moving just as fast beneath us.

“Does anyone see?—”

A scream tore through the air, then searing pain came along the bond.

“Ilara!” I bellowed across the valley. It echoed, cracking across the snowcapped mountains as a glimpse of my mate appeared through the clouds.

She was millees ahead of us, barely visible.

Fire had ignited along one of her wings. Her beautiful white feathers were up in flames, and then my mate plummeted from the sky.

CHAPTER 13 - ILARA

Searing pain tore through my wing. Fire engulfed my feathers.Oh Blessed Mother! I’ve been hit!

I fell from the sky, the air only igniting the flames further. My entire wing had erupted from the spell the warlock had cast from below.

I frantically tried to smother the flames with my clothing, but I was tumbling too fast and too awkwardly through the air to stop it.

The tip of a tree loomed.

A huge canopy of jagged branches waited.

I hit it at full speed.

Another scream tore from me when I crashed through the snapping branches.

Fire still raged along my wing, but I called upon my fire elemental affinity and smothered the flames. Charred feathers and burned flesh remained as I fell from one branch to another, hitting each painfully hard.

I yanked a dose of my air affinity from my gut whenmy thoughts finally cleared enough to do so, and it cushioned the remainder of my fall.

I landed in a crouch on the ground, wincing when my burned wing raked against the tree trunk, but at least I hadn’t fallen on my back.
