I called for my magic, begged it to heed my command, but Tylen’s contact hadn’t been fleeting. He’d clamped a hold of my arm, prolonging his nulling magic until it barreled through my system unchecked. My heart thundered as the strength of his power slammed down on my abilities, and given how long he’d touched me, I didn’t know when I would be able to access them again.

Disbelief rendered me momentarily frozen, as wasIlara, but then I snarled and advanced on the Lochen king’s son.

Tylen’s eyes flashed wide, and he bolted out of the way just as Drachu sauntered around a curtain near the window.

Ilara’s heart thundered along our bond as my thoughts shifted rapid-fire.How? How is Drachu here?

The Lochen king smiled.

“What’s happening?” Ilara gasped.

“Seize her,” my father commanded. “Now.”

The dozen guards moved forward, and I realized whatever strange signal the king had done prior with his fingers had been to enact this attack.

Before I could blink, eight of the guards surrounded me, and four encircled Ilara. Swords pointed at my neck, abdomen, and back. Just as many pointed at my mate, but she quickly erected a Sheild around herself.

I advanced, but one of the swords sank into my skin, and a trail of blood appeared. The guard holding it trembled, but his grip held steady even when I growled.

“I would think twice about resisting, Norivun,” the king said in a smug tone. “My guards have orders to detain you using whatever means necessary.”

Ilara’s gaze shot to mine, but despite the king’s warning, she threw her air Shield until it covered me too.

“Nish! Ryder! Haxil! Sandus!” I yelled for my guards, but Tylen was suddenly there again.

He moved in a flurry of speed until his hands brushed against Ilara’s Shields and then her arm. Shespun away from him, but in a blink, her wings and violet eyes snapped out of existence. Terror flashed in her expression as the king’s guards moved in on her.

Tylen moved quickly away, holding his hands up. “I’m sorry,” he said so quietly that I almost didn’t hear him. “But you left us with no choice.”

Rattling came from the throne room doors.

“My prince!” Haxil yelled from the hall.

“Open these fucking doors!” Nish shouted.

Pounding came next as my guards tried to break their way in, but the Isalee steel held.

My father let out a booming laugh. “Mother Below, this is going even better than I thought it would.”

I swirled around, seething at the tyrant on the throne, but my father’s guards moved with me, keeping me caged in.

King Novakin wore a malicious smile. He fluttered his hand toward the Lochen prince. “Thank you, Tylen. You may retreat for now.”

Tylen nodded stiffly, then walked briskly back to the curtained area. A curtain that hid a servant’s passage.

“Fucking coward!” I snarled after him. The bastard had beenhidingwhen he’d entered the throne room, then ran to do my father’s bidding when he’d been summoned.

“We were set up,” Ilara whispered as she stood frozen in the center of the guards surrounding her.

Drachu crossed his arms, watching everything with an impatient expression. The Lochen king wore a fullset of clothing, unlike his usual attire, and the reality of our situation hit me like a ton of falling stones.

My father had known all along that Ilara and I would be coming. He’d known since we’d destroyed the veil that it was inevitable we would appear.

And he’d been waiting. Planning. Plotting.

“What do you want?” I bit out through clenched teeth as devastation rippled from Ilara along our bond.

The king crossed his arms, and his eyes narrowed into slits. “I believe you know exactly what I want.”
