She shrugged unapologetically. “What? Maybe we’ll form a book club when this is all over. You never know.”

Nish laughed as I rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t stop the tug of my lips. The confidence and swagger that had bloomed in my mate over the last few months still took me by surprise at times.

I planted a kiss on her temple, and her roses and dew scent flooded my senses. “Before we start any book clubs, let’s work on removing my father from power.”

She bowed, and her long dark hair draped over her shoulders. “Of course, my prince.”

“Mind if I get back to my wine and reading now?” Michas asked.

“By all means, Lord Crimsonale. We’ll get out of your hair.” Nish waved the six of us together.

I activated my mistphasing magic, and the realm disappeared around us.

We retreatedto the inn near the Nolus border, the same inn we’d used previously when I’d been weakened and had to recharge my magic.

We tucked into our chambers for the night, and Ilara slipped out of her tunic. She stood only in her underthings, and the firelight caught on her feathered wings and ebony hair. Gods, she was beautiful.

She eyed me curiously. “Why didn’t you just make a bargain with Lord Crimsonale that stated he couldn’t alter the looking glass’s scenes and have him create replicas? For us to create copies won’t be easy.”

“No, it won’t be.” My shirt caught on my wings when I took it off, and Ilara’s gaze crawled over my shoulders and chest. A surge of pride worked through me when her scent grew muskier. “And true, I could have included that in our bargain and had him do the work, but then Lord Crimsonale would have also taken credit for stirring the unrest. The less involved he is in all of this, the better.”

She nibbled on her lower lip as a frown marred her features. “I didn’t consider that.”

“Which is why two minds working together are better than one.” I prowled toward her, unable to resist the curve of her back and the swell of her hips. I ran my hands over her, loving her dips and smooth flesh.

Her breath hitched, and her wings relaxed more, draping down her back as I growled and leaned in to kiss her. “But enough of him and what lies ahead. I would like to take my wife to bed.”

Her frown disappeared, and a smile ghosted her lips.

I scooped her up and kissed her in the same beat. Her scent flooded me, possessing me, owning me. Ittook everything in me not to ravish her right then and there, and when I laid her on the bed and stared at the beautiful creature that was my eternal mate, I wondered what I’d done in this realm and the next to deserve the pure joy that was radiating through me.

We spentthe next two days gathering the supplies needed to make copies of the looking glass. It wasn’t easy. Looking glass could only be forged from sand and rock found on the tip of Alshee, the tallest peak in the Gielis mountain range. And once a looking glass was crafted, it had to be spelled using ancient magic that only a fairy with a truth affinity could weave.

Thankfully, we happened to know a fairy with a truth affinity.

“Do you need help carrying them?” Ilara asked as we were about to depart for the Cliffs of Sarum.

“I’ll manage.” I tucked the six newly forged looking glasses into my cloak. Silver metal frames glinted around them, and their long handles made holding them easy. Their shiny surfaces were currently smooth, only appearing as a normal mirror, but once they were spelled, they could be used to communicate with someone from far away or used to record events as we’d done.

Those who could afford looking glasses often had memories stored in them of meaningful times or events. However, they’d been known to appear in the supernaturalcourts a time or two when criminal activity was caught in action.

“One looking glass for each territory.” I stowed them deeper into my cloak. “Are you sure Cailis can bespell them?”

Ilara wrung her hands, and then forced a smile. “She’s a quick study. I’m sure she can do it as long as we provide the spell that’s needed.”

“We have a backup plan, right?” Nish asked from the corner of our inn room. My guards were staying behind, but that didn’t mean they were any less involved in what we were doing.

I cocked an eyebrow. “Do you know of any other fae with a truth affinity that we can trust to dethrone the king?”

Nish sighed. “Good point. So no backup plan then.”

“Cailis can do it.” Ryder crossed his arms. “I’ve seen enough of your sister to know that she’s fearless and doesn’t give up.”

“And who does that remind you of?” Sandus asked with a nod in my direction.

Haxil laughed. “Exactly. With the Seary girls helping us, we’ll be all right.”

Ilara glanced up at me, her blue eyes shining with apprehension, but beneath that lay a fierceness that had been born in her when her warrior affinity had manifested. “Ready?”
