I sucked in my fire. I towered over her, her figure so small beneath my giant dragon form.

Then thousands of figures of Ilara danced before my vision. All of the figures in the courtyard were suddenly my mate. The imaginary gods and goddesses were gone. The soldiers had disappeared too. Instead, it was only my mate as she kneeled, sobbed, beggedme to stop.

I morphed back into my fae form and cast illusionary clothes to hide my naked body. I locked my dragon affinity deep within me while the poisonous hallucinogen played deadly games on my mind.

My mate’s scream again pierced my ears.

Screaming.

Screaming.

Dear gods, she was screaming, but fromwhere? And was she really?

All of the Ilara’s before me were screaming as distant battle cries continued to wage.

“Ilara!” I yelled for her, but the cries of slaughtering, bloodshed, and hallucinations rang around me.

And then the castle doors were opening. My mother was running out, my brother just behind her.

Another trick of my mind.

“Novakin!” Queen Lissandra shouted.

A hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back just as another whiz of a weapon careened past my face.

“Stay down, my prince!” Haxil yelled. “Ilara’s still fighting, but your mind can’t be trusted right now!”

My foggy vision showed my guards standing above me, their swords a blur of power as they fought and danced to protect me, but then a god appeared above them, and I struggled to comprehend reality from fiction. Goddess Amaras grinned while lightning forked through the air above her.

“Novakin!” the queen yelled again, and then my mother was right beside me. She gazed up at the king of the Solis continent. “This ends right now! You will never hurt my sons again!”

My mother pushed away from me and flew toward the wall. Black hair streamed down her back, and a dazzling blue gown swirled around her legs. Fire blazed to life around her—herfire.

The king’s eyes widened, and his jaw dropped.

The entire wall of the castle went up in flames.

My father screamed.

Then my mother’s cries joined his.

My mind spun.What’s happening?

A guttural cry came from one of my guards, then the sound of a weapon tearing through flesh.

My father’s cry of pain continued to careen through the sky.

I tried to push up, tried to see what was happening, but a boot caught me on the stomach.

“Stay down, my prince!” Haxil yelled.

My heart exploded at the picture painted before me.

It showed my mother standing on the wall beside my father. Fire engulfed both of their bodies as their dual screams of pain pierced the air.

The courtyard abruptly grew quiet.

Swords fell to the snowy ground.
