CHAPTER 17

HAWK

Breathing deeply, I watched as the sun slowly rose. There was a foggy mist hanging over the trees this morning, but it looked like it was going to be a beautifulday.I just wished that we could enjoy it.

It had been eighteen hours since Kaleb had gone missing from his supposedly secure nursery. It was all over the news, causing a shit storm as we were harassed by reporters. I'd had to watch as Avy slowly fell apart at each passing hour. We'd done an interview on the front lawn, there had been a police liaison officer and our lawyer with us.We'd appealed but had not had any further news.

To further murky the waters, the woman who had abducted him had been found this morning in an alley in London with her throat slit.

Skinny was scouring the internet as well as the dark web to try and find something. Anything on her. But she'd seemed to be clean other than owing a shit tonne of money for a gambling debt.Skinny was pulling strings to find out who it was she owed.

The inaction was killing me, but I knew it was pointless to start rushing out without having any direction of where to look. I’d tried to reach out to Rachel but had got an out-of-order toneon her mobile. We’d driven to her last known address, but she hadn’t been there and by the amount of mail in her post-box in the lobby of where her flat was, it looked like she hadn’t been home for a while. We’d still gone up to check her flat. Bond had managed to pick the lock. The place was dusty and had the musty air smell of having been locked up for a while. Rachel must still be abroad with her sugar daddy/boss.

While we’d been in the city, we’d also checked out his nightclub again. It was Bond that came through. He’d recognised one of the bouncers on the door as being from his old neighbourhood and had gone to speak to him while we waited with the bikes. We’d watched as they’d had a long conversation, then Bond had laughed, slapped the guy on the shoulder, pulled him in for a hug while shaking his hand. I couldn’t be sure, but it looked like Bond slipped him some cash.

Navy caught my eye; we waited until Bond came back. He started speaking as soon as he was back with us, “Cole says they came back day before yesterday. But he hasn’t seen either one of them since then. He doesn’t know where they went after they left here.”

‘Well, at least it was something’I thought.

“Thanks, Bond, it’s better than nothing. How much did that cost you?” I asked.

Scowling at me, he grunted, “It’s irrelevant, Kaleb is family. I’d pay anything for information to find out where he is.”

Clearing my throat to get rid of the lump that had formed at his words, “Thank you, brother,” I told him.

Bond nodded at me, not replying, just put his helmet on and got on his bike, ready to get back home. Hopefully, with this new information, Skinny would be able to find something out.

That had been last night. Skinny had been locked in his room since then, only leaving to use the bathroom or get something to drink. We had to get a break. I just hoped to Christ it was soon because I felt like I was about to come out of my skin.

We'd finally managed to persuade Avy to lie down to rest, although I’d found out after the fact that Rea had slipped something into a cup of tea she'd given her. But at least she'd get a few hours of respite. There was no way I could sleep. I missed my little man like I was missing a limb. He'd slowly worked his way deep into my heart. I'm not sure what I would do if we didn't find him soon.

Just then, from inside the clubhouse, Skinny gave a loud curse and shouted out my name in a panicked tone, "Hawk!"

Jumping to my feet, I rushed back into the clubhouse straight into Skinny's room. Not stopping until I skidded to a halt and took a good look at my brother; he was pale and had bloodshot red eyes from the hours he'd been stuck at his screens. Empty coffee cups and energy drinks littered his desks.

"Did you find something?!" I barked as soon as I was in the room.

The rest of the brotherhood had followed me in as I ran past where they had all been dozing or sleeping in the chairs in the main room.

"Sort of. It wasn’t me that found it. I was sent it and it's not good, brother."

Walking around his desk to have a look at his screen and my stomach sank.

"Fuck," I whispered hoarsely, "we can't let Avy know."

There on the screen, along with another toddler locked in a cage, was my son. His face swollen from crying, dirty tracksshowing on his face from his tears. The other toddler looked like a little girl, they were holding tight onto each other, asleep for now which was a small mercy. What had scared me and had my stomach sinking was the clock in the right-hand corner that was counting down from thirty hours. I knew what that meant. Thirty hours and he'd be up for sale. We'd never find him then. I didn't want to think about what would happen to him once he was sold.

Curses echoed around the room as each of my brothers saw what was on the screen.

"How did you find this?" I asked Skinny.

"That's the thing, I didn't," Skinny replied, looking a little freaked out about the whole thing.

"What do you mean you didn't find it?" Reaper barked.

"It was sent to me with a message stating it was from a friend. They also said to give them twelve hours and they would have him back with us. It was signed:Friend of the Hawk."

Running a shaky hand down my face, my hand rasped against my beard, and I rubbed at my eyes.I had no clue who this person was that said they were my friend but if I ever found out, I’d be owing them until the end of time.
