The last shreds of the orgasm left my body, and struggled to catch my breath, my mind fuzzed.

He kissed his way back up to my neck, whispering my name like a prayer against my skin.

I rested my head on his shoulder and listened to him pant as he held me like I weighed nothing. At that moment, it was just us and nothing else mattered, but with each passing minute, the knowledge of tomorrow weighed heavier than before. It was a reminder of what this was: good-bye.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Bacon. Eggs. Were those waffles I could smell? Mmm syrup. I walked sheepishly into the kitchen, which had been scrubbed to an inch of its life, and eyed Dora, who was frowning over a frying pan.

“Hey.” I cleared my throat, and she forced out a smile. “You cooking the full works?”

She placed her hand on her hip, tapping a long fingernail against the front of her apron. “I won’t have him leaving without a good meal in his stomach. It’s quite a journey.”

I hadn’t noticed Maddox standing just outside of the open back door until he choke-laughed on his coffee. “He’s not going on vacation.”

She pointed a finger at him. “He and that brother of his need sustenance. They’re going to fight evil.”

I cocked my head. She’d been so good with the whole thing, considering how she felt about the otherworld and Estia. We’d all been careful to only talk about Lucius and the underworld, leaving her precious deity out of the mix. Still, Estia didn’t sound much better than Lucius. I was just glad Dora’s thoughts about the high god, Lucius, had changed since we’d told her what happened.

She shook her head, sighing in disappointment. “He is supposed to be a god, and he was going to hurt you and Naomi, two innocent mortals.” She shook her head. “Bringing demons to our world.”

“I know, Dora.” I kept a brave face, sitting at the table as she served me a plate of waffles. I was ravenous after the night I’d had.

Maddox winked at me when I looked at him. “Good night?”

“It was—you know, it was none of your business.” I scowled, desperate to change the topic. “Where’s Edmund? Naomi?” I scoffed down a bite of waffle, muffling, “Aziel?”

Maddox laughed. “Except you make it everyone’s business when the whole house can hear you both.”

“Maddox.” I snapped my fingers. “Where is everyone?”

“Aziel spent the night talking with Naomi.”

I arched an eyebrow. “Just talking?”

Dora clicked her tongue. “Of course they were only talking.”

Maddox grinned. “They really did just talk. They left the door open and spent the night in the living room.” He rolled his eyes. “They both like reading. Apparently, it’s what Aziel did a lot in his prison realm.”

I laughed. “I cannot envision him reading.”

“Me too. I went in, poured myself a martini or two at the bar,” Maddox said. I recalled the globe filled with bottles and drinks in the living area. “Then went upstairs. I sent a magic quill to Aaron. He came over. Just left actually.”

“I thought you didn’t go back to you exes?” I drummed my fingers on the table.

He shrugged. “I was bored.”

“Sure,” I replied, smirking into my coffee.

“I don’t do commitment.” He walked over to make himself what I assumed was a second or third black coffee. “I’m married to my job.”

Dora made him a plate of bacon and a couple of slices of wholegrain toast with a poached egg on the side. “Here’s your breakfast.” She turned toward me. “Special requests from his majesty here. Apparently plain old waffles and bacon wasn’t enough.”

Maddox sipped his drink and sat at the table. “Ah.” He tucked a napkin into his collar, covering the front of his shirt. “I can always count on my main lady.”

She rolled her eyes but smiled all the same. “Edmund should be down soon.”

“How would you know that?” Maddox asked.
