“Who?” Stacey gave her a confused look, but her friend laughed in embarrassment.

“Sorry. Too many years keeping great-Gran company while we watched ancient reruns on daytime vid screen. You can’t tell me you never watched Murder She Wrote? Everyone had to have that one great-Gran that insisted on watching crusty old mystery sitcoms.”

Stacey shook her head, her lips quirking as the other woman gave her an exasperated look.

“Figures I’d be the one with the odd childhood. Well, the short of it is that she was quite nosy and always exploring different places and situations to solve mysteries. That’s what you remind me of right now the way you’re sneaking around.”

“That I’m acting like an amateur detective?” she queried slowly.

Quin backhanded her arm lightly but brought her voice down to a quiet hiss. “No… just being sneaky and likely bound to get yourself in trouble sooner or later. And since you’ve started acting weird ever since that Lorgor captain visited us, I’m assuming it has something to do with him.”

“It doesn’t mean anything,” she mumbled, looking away. “I’m just trying to get a lay of the ship and seeing what sort of allies we can find.”

“Mmm Hmm. I suppose that the captain would make one hell of an ally,” Quin replied with a grin but threw up her hands in surrender when Stacey frowned at her. “Right, I know. It means nothing. I’m just saying, if you need a little something extra to move things along, I’ve heard that when he’s got you bent over, fucking you, there is this spot on a Lorgor that just…”

“What… no!” Stacey’s mouth fell open in shock but quickly masked her surprise with a feigned smile when several of the other women in the room looked in the direction curiously. She gave Quin a playful shove as if sharing a joke between them, allowing her to lean in close as they looked away with disinterest. “No,” she repeated in a whisper. “It’s nothing like that.”

Quin wrinkled her nose. “Really? Why? I can tell that you like him—and he’s definitely interested. At this point just about anything is better than being stuck for the rest of our lives either beneath Gaix or riding him. Hell, I would be going for Lorgor tail and praying for the best if one so much as looked in my direction the way that captain looks at you.”

“You’ve only seen him that one time,” Stacey protested, her blush growing, but her friend smirked.

“Twice, actually, but once is enough to get the message loud and clear. You two could barely keep your eyes off each other,” Quin pointed out with a snicker of amusement. “Oh, don’t scowl—it was cute! I didn’t even know that any of us could manage to look flustered anymore. It gives me hope that someday someone will inspire that feeling in me again. Luckily, Gaix was distracted enough not to notice, and that all of that…ah… activity was enough to distract Athdar as well both times. Besides, you can’t convince me that Athdar and Gaix would know politely reserved and genuine interest if it bit them in the ass. Of course, it helps that the captain can look pretty intimidating so that most of the other ladies around here avoided him instead of looking too closely. Which is good news because it gives you a chance.”

“Quin!” Stacey hissed but her friend simply smirked in reply.

“Hey, don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just saying that when it’s you and him together, be brave and go for it. The only pussy in the room should be the one between your spread legs begging him for more. It’s win-win. He gets what he obviously wants, and you get an opening for escape when we reach Kaidava. That’s what you want, right?”

Stacey made a sound of frustration but nodded, unwilling to admit to her friend that her draw to him went far beyond that. His silent, solid presence reassured her after years of dealing with the chaotic whirlwind that was Gaix whenever he stepped foot into their wing of the females’ quarters—which was frequently. Then there was the fact that Captain Otorol really filled out his uniform well so that the fabric had little choice but to cling to his powerful frame. Strong, stable, dependable, and incredibly sexy all did it for her. But he was captain of the starship and obviously loyal to the core as well as weighed down with a considerable number of responsibilities. Her infatuation was crazy. She needed to get away from Gaix as much as she needed to breathe. Escape had to be her priority, not her untimely obsession with the Lorgor captain. The best he could give her was perhaps a promise to look the other way when she made a break for it. It wasn’t the least bit realistic to pin any hope of escape on an alliance with him.

“Yeah. That’s what I want,” she agreed, albeit a tad sourly. “I just don’t think it’s possible. He commands this starship which means he has more responsibility than most, which gives him more to lose than a lot of the males on this ship, but it isn’t like he’s some alien noble who can whisk me away and protect me behind the power of his title or something. He has no reason to jeopardize everything for me. Honestly it would be stupid to expect him to.”

“Okay,” Quin drawled sympathetically. “I see you’ve really thought about this. And I get that. But if that’s the case then what is the harm in enjoying yourself for once in your fucking life? This is a Valentine’s Day trip and there is zero romance going on. Live a little to remind yourself that there is something better than this out there.”

Stacey gave her friend a weak smile. “I suppose when you put it that way, maybe I should. It’s not like I’m not already engaging in a little light stalking.”

“That’s the spirit! Now get out of here and get a little bit for me,” Quin whispered with another quiet cackle as Stacey rose to her feet.

A quick glance around verified it was as good a time as any to make her move. Gaix’s other mates had already begun to disperse. Some of them headed to their rooms while others were making their way off the deck to stretch their legs a bit—though usually in small groups to keep each other company.

Stacey strolled around the room lazily as she waited several minutes to provide some distance between them. Only once she was certain that she provided ample time to ensure that she would be able to slip around unnoticed did she finally slip out the door. Tonight, she would pin down the elusive captain and she did not need or want company for what was to happen then.

Varik stalked his quarry. The female walking down the corridor was a vision in in soft shades of purple and pink, the layered gossamer fabric moving around her elegantly with her every step. His ears twitched as he picked up another sound and his nostrils flared, catching the scent of another male nearby. It was unfamiliar, likely one of the general crew rather than a ranking officer. He hissed a warning in a low clicking sound. It had the desired results. The male’s advance halted immediately, paused, and then withdrew completely with a guttural growl.

His vibinum trembled as he considered giving chasing to assert his territory. It was instinct and one that he was struggling harder to repress. But as a fresh wave as his female’s scent drifted over him, he summarily dismissed the male altogether, his focus homing in on her once more as he moved in closer.

It did not escape his attention that he was getting oddly territorial about this particular deck. But the more Stacey came there, the more possessive he had started to become over it. She had explored other places as well, but this deck where he had finally gotten up his nerve to approach her was a spot to which they were both inexplicably drawn. And terribly exposed. His vibinum was fully fanned in warning as his eyes rested on her for only moments at a time before restlessly scanning the open surroundings. It was disconcerting to a male whose species mated in hidden burrows. He wanted to whisk her away to his quarters—or his office as that was closer. Anywhere that he could securely keep her with him without intrusion.

The sweet, aphrodisiac venom filling his mouth teased him with its heady promise of how much pleasure could be found in such a nest. Even applied externally it would have an effect, bringing her a great intensity of pleasure with his every touch. He could make it so very good for her. She was intrigued… interested… and found him distinguished. Her sweetly spoken words ran over him like the tantalizing brush of numerous fingers. He scented her desire now. She knew he was there even though she had her back to him as she stared at the stars illuminating the viewing screen, her feminine musk a perfume thickening in the air.

She understood where this was heading and was prepared for it, her cunt eager and receptive to being bred by a Lorgor’s rut. The thoughts rushed through his mind, spurring on his excitement as he drew closer. His. She was his. His frillum unfurled and his cock swelled in his pants, his sex weeping eagerly for her and dampening the front of his pants. It was insanity but the temptation was impossible to resist any longer. And Gaix and his gonsi were indisposed. His opportunities were running out and soon they would be on Kaidava without no dark corridors in which to hide.

His growl traveled through the dimly lit hall and his female shivered with awareness, the scent of her lust ripening for him in response. She did not turn around, however, not even when he was directly behind her, his much larger body trembling with the barest restraint.

“Varik,” she whispered, and he growled again, the deep sound echoing from his chest as he shadowed over her. A quiver ran through her as she dragged in a sharp breath, and he imagined that she was drinking in his scent as much as he was savoring hers. “What are you waiting for?”

That was all he had been waiting for, but still he hesitated even though he practically shook with the effort to keep control of himself.
