He grins again, his pupils so dilated I'm surprised he can even form a sentence. "Who the fuck knows, man. I took the purse and her phone and ran. Ditched the knife."
"Liar."
I rear back and slam my shoulder into his stomach, and he turns to the side, retching.
"Geez," he pants, "what are you? Her personal police? Little Luna give it up to you?"
I freeze. What did he call her? He knows her name? "What the hell did you just say?"
He wipes his hand over his mouth. "I'm just saying... she's like her mother. Always teasing, but never giving it up. But you look like you've had a taste of her. Or else why would you be here."
I throw him onto the ground, my leg pulling back to swing it into his side.
Damien pulls me back, his phone in his hand. "Kingsley, she's awake. We have to go. Now. She needs you."
He rolls over onto his back, grinning at me through a mouth of rotting teeth."So, I guess big sis didn't die then? That's too bad. I was hoping to get a good inheritance like she did."
I pant, staring at his sniveling face looking up at me from the ground, her voice in my head,"Come back to me, Kingsley. He's not worth it."

Ow.
The light is bright.
Too bright.
"Off," I mumble.
"Luna? Did you say something?"
Kingsley. I think he's whispering but it still sounds pretty loud.
"Light. Off."
"You want the light off? Hang on a sec."
Almost immediately the bright light turns dark, and I feel my lips curl upward.
"My hero," I say, every word like sandpaper on my throat.
He chuckles softly. "Hardly. But I'm here. For whatever you need."
I force one eye open, and he's there, holding my hand, by the bed.
"Where am I?"
"Westminster Hospital. You were…"
I remember. "But you came."
He squeezes my hand, too hard, but I don't care. "Of course I did. I'm sorry I was late. I got stuck on a call. I won't ever be late again."
"It's okay. I just wanted you to see me in the dress you bought me. It was so beautiful."
I feel his lips on my fingers. "Youwere beautiful. You are so beautiful."
