And by the wide window, sitting on a gray chaise lounge and reading a folder, sits Kingsley, illuminated only by the burning fireplace and a small table lamp.

I remember him looking comfortable at his suite, but he looks… at home here. Still wearing his dress shirt, but tieless.

Homey.

Hubandly.

I shake my head to rid it of the thought, and I swing my legs off the bed.

The noise makes him look up from his work.

He watches as I get to my feet, unsteady at first, but stronger with each step.

“Hey,” I say, joining him on the couch.

He puts the folder down on top of his laptop keyboard and closes his laptop monitor on top of it. Quiet. Each movement precise and exact.

“Feel any better?”

I gift him a smile for asking. “A little. I guess I was tired. It’s been… er, a hard few days. Few weeks really.”

He nods. “I guess now I understand why. You should get some more sleep.”

I shake my head. “I feel like Aurora at this point.” He nods at the reference. “Can I ask where we are?”

“My cottage in Watergate Bay.” He names a small beach town about five hours from London. I guess it was a long drive.

“You live here?”

Short shrug. “Not really. I come here on weekends sometimes if I’m not too busy. I like the water.”

For that, I give him an even bigger smile. “Volunteered information. That’s new. Don’t make it a habit now.”

His face doesn’t stir from its impassive expression, but he says, “I’m sure you’ll keep me in check.”

We sit for a moment, enjoying the crackle of the fire.

“Are you hungry?” he asks after a while, his eyes still reflecting the flames.

“I’d actually love a bath.”

He gets to his feet and leaves the room without saying anything.

“Chatty fellow, isn’t he?” I murmur to myself.

He pops his head back into the room. “Did you say something?”

I bite my cheek. “Er, no.”

He narrows his eyes and disappears again.

Five minutes later, he returns, gesturing for me to follow him into an adjoining room.

I hadn’t realized it was an en suite bathroom,

A full size, straight out of a magazine, fully decked out bathroom with a separate tub and shower, a room-length dressing table, and a full-length mirror.

“Wow.”
