“Sure. The ax is safe in the trunk. Away from the crazy nutter.”

She giggles and pulls her arms tighter around her body with a sigh.

I gently close the car door and jog back to the driver’s side.

She’s already sleeping by the time I start the ignition again.

I watch her.

For just a minute.

And wonder what mysterious way the universe is working in right now.

I reach out to tuck an escaped curl of hair behind her ear, the touch of her skin feeling like peace under my fingertips.

And then, I drive.

Far, far away.

Twelve

Luna

I don’t know how long I sleep, but I know I do.

Waking now and then only when the car jostles a little, I catch glimpses out the window of the landscape changing from city to countryside.

I feel him in the driver’s seat rather than see him. A presence, watching over me. A guardian angel in silk and pure wool.

When he finally parks and lifts me out of the car, the sky is a kaleidoscope of oranges and pinks. Swirls of delirious, otherworldly color. He carries me inside and lays me on a bed, and in the daze, I feel him pull my shoes off and drape a blanket over me.

“Kingsley?”

“Yes, Luna?”

“Thank you.”

“Get some sleep.”

And I do.

I don’t know how much or for how long, just that it’s filled with dreams.

And when I wake, the colors are gone and it’s dark, and I still don’t feel more rested.

But I do feel safe.

My eyes adjusting to the light, I sit up.

I’m in what looks like a bedroom in a cottage.

But not just any bedroom; it’s like a bedroom in the most luxurious home ever.

A thick luscious white carpet covers the floor, looking softer than any sweater I’ve ever worn on my body.

Eggshell jacquard wallpaper flecked with gold. Simple but sleek, handcrafted furniture.

The surface of the king-size four-poster bed I’m lying in is basically engulfed in a feather down blanket that wraps around me like a soft cloud, and the sheets glide, silky smooth, like fresh cream against my skin.
