Page 27 of Her Heart's Desire

The only reply was the wind whistling through the pines.

She stood frozen as the shape morphed back into the shadows like a ghost. It was not Jake.

She suddenly got a horrible feeling. Would it be safer to go back and risk running into whatever it was? Or should she blaze a new trail into the unknown?

A clap of thunder broke her stalemate. Cold raindrops poured down on her, chilling her to the bone. She had no other choice. She’d risk the trip back. It was better to face a ghost than get lost in the darkening woods.

With chattering teeth, she sprinted toward the cabin, heedless of the wet branches slapping at her. Her only thoughts were Jake and safety.

As she broke through the forest and caught sight of the cabin, a giddy rush of relief surged through her.

A man’s low-pitched laugh echoed from behind her.

A shiver of dread ran up her spine. He’d followed her, and he wanted her to know he was there.

She had to get away.

She didn’t risk a look back. Instead, she picked up her speed, racing toward the cabin and Jake’s welcoming arms.

She clambered onto the porch, soaked to the skin and trembling. So close to safety, she turned, and thought the mist-shrouded form was in the woods. She blinked, and it faded away.

Had she just imagined it? Maybe her nerves were playing tricks on her.

Jake jerked the door open. “Where were you? I’ve been going nuts trying to find you.”

She frowned at him, noting his fierce scowl and greeting that shot welcoming all to hell. Then, she noticed his wet hair and soaked tennis shoes, and felt her outrage melt. He must have been out searching for her.

“I was taking a walk,” she replied through chattering teeth.

“Of all the crazy things to do. I don’t want you going off on your own anymore.”

He pulled her into the cabin. Stopping to grab a towel from the rack, he ran it over her shaking body. Then he started to unbutton her soaked blouse.

When he finished, she shrugged out of her blouse, recalling his promise as a small bonfire rekindled in her, submerging her remnants of fear. If there was any time she needed the comfort of his touch, it was now. It was time to listen to her heart.

She watched his eyes darken with desire when his gaze dropped to her breasts. Her pink nipples were visible through her wet silk bra. She reveled in her ability to turn him on. Abandoning all modesty, she slowly and deliberately undid the back clasp, let it slowly slide down her arms, and then tossed it on the floor.

He muttered a sensual promise as he pulled her into his arms for a hard, claiming kiss.

She clung to him desperately, seeking all he had to give. She burned for him. He was her destiny. She knew that now, surely as she knew her name.

He eased away, unzipping her jeans, and pulling them off, along with her panties. He scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the sofa, placing her gently on it.

She eagerly watched him shed his clothes. Then, he was on top of her, his hot mouth teasing the aching peaks of her breasts.

She cried out, pressing against him. She needed him inside her. Now.

He groaned. “Easy, baby. Love lesson number one, never rush.”

She murmured her agreement as her mouth sought the warmth of his neck. She tasted the tangy heat of him. His low, rumbled sigh reminded her of a big cat. She rubbed against him, encouraged him, and reached to cup his manhood.

His gasp of pleasure excited her. He made her feel like a complete woman. He moved in her hand and then pulled away.

She gazed up at him, stricken. “What’s the matter? Wasn’t I doing it right?”

“You were doing it too well. I want to take my time and pleasure you properly.”

She muffled a cry of delight as he touched her slick, wet flesh, caressing her to madness. She writhed against him, overwhelmed with need.
