Page 28 of Her Heart's Desire

He moved, covered himself with protection, then settled between her legs. He started to enter her.

She gasped at his fierce possession, crying out at the almost too-full connection between their bodies. He was too big.

“We don’t fit.”

“Shh. Give it a few minutes, Sunshine. You’re so tight. As soon as you relax, things will work just fine.”

“I don’t know.” She flashed back to Grayson’s harsh dismissal of her sexual charms that night. It was the exact opposite of the way he’d acted during their courtship. “Maybe Grayson was right. Maybe I don’t have what it takes to satisfy a man.”

Jake went still, and gazed down at her, frowning. “That turkey was wrong. Love lesson number two, never doubt my desire for you. You’re every inch a woman. My woman.” He bent to kiss her, silencing any protest she might have made.

She relaxed as the kiss continued.

His hand ran up the side of her trembling body, and she moaned when he cupped her breast. Then, he caressed the exquisitely sensitive spot at the apex of her thighs.

She sighed, melting into his caress. This was going to work, after all.

Ever so gently, he began to move. As they rocked together, sparks of pleasure shimmered through her. Her fingers slid into his thick hair, and she deepened the kiss. Her fingernails lightly scored his back as his deep thrusts drove her out of her head.

“That’s it, Sunshine,” Jake rasped. “Go wild for me.”

A crescendo of pleasure washed over her, and she rode on wave after wave of bliss. “Jake.”

She heard her name on his lips as he exploded inside her, then he went still.

He lay motionless for a moment, his breathing harsh. Bending to brush a brief kiss on her lips, he reversed their positions, flipping her over to lie on top of him.

She snuggled in his strong embrace, feeling loved and safe.

As she listened to his heartbeat, thoughts of being chased in the woods intruded. Jake would probably be angry, but she had to tell him. Knowing she couldn’t put it off any longer, she exclaimed, “I think someone was following me.”

He suddenly went still. “What did you say?”

“When I was walking in the woods, I got this creepy feeling someone was watching me. It was getting pretty dark by then, but I thought I saw a man for a minute. Then it started to rain. As I ran back to the cabin, I heard him laugh.” She shuddered at the memory.

She gazed down at Jake. Did he believe her, or did he think she was hysterical?

His grim expression told her he believed her, all right.

She hurried to reassure him. “It was probably some teenager with a twisted sense of humor, just like the vandal in town the other day.”

He slanted a searching glance her way. “What else haven’t you told me?”

“Nothing.” She shrugged. The incidents were unrelated, but she didn’t want to keep any secrets from him. “Someone rifled through my car when I was in town yesterday. Kathy figured it was just some kids raising heck. They didn’t take anything, so I let it drop.”

His brow wrinkled as he frowned at her. “She’s probably right, but I’ll still wrap you in cotton wool while we’re here.”

She sighed, settling on top of him and resting her head on his chest. That sounded perfect to her. She’d like nothing better than to be wrapped up in him.

The next evening, Kathy sat down at the dinette table and flicked a long-suffering look Jake’s way. “I’m still not thrilled about involving these two civilians.” She gestured to Samantha and Tad.

Jake nodded. “I agree with you, but they involved themselves. I figured it would be better to have them where I can keep an eye on them.”

Samantha frowned at the pithy exchange. “I, for one, don’t appreciate being talked about like I’m not here. What am I supposed to do? Sit around here twiddling my thumbs?” Jake’s caution had escalated a hundredfold because of her disclosures last night.

He turned to her. “I’ve been thinking about that. I changed my mind about your duties. Could you go with Kathy and Tad? I’m not leaving you here all alone.”

“No fair. You promised me I could help. Besides, we have your two-way radios. So, I won’t be alone. You and I will be in constant communication.”
