“I have some money,” I say barely audible. “A couple of thousand dollars I managed to save throughout the years when I was living with Jax. Can I pay you back for the clothes?”

I had never intended on telling Chase or anyone else about the money but standing here now with Chase I felt so safe. It felt so easy to be honest with him. Is this some kind of shifterpower I don’t know about?

“Don’t be ridiculous. I got those clothes for you because I wanted to. It wasn’t a burden or a hardship to me.” He says in a low voice.

My cheeks flush. He is close enough to me that with only one step forward I could press my lips to his. I ache to touch him, but instead I take a step backward and smile.

“What’s for lunch? I am starving?” I say deflecting my feelings.

A brief look of disappointment crosses Chase’s face. Did he want to kiss me too? Or did he somehow know I’d been contemplating kissing him?

“You’ll have to ask Ash, it’s his turn to hunt.” Chase says loudly, eliciting an annoyed groan from Ash and a low chuckle from Isaiah.

Right of course they need to hunt. I wasn’t lying when I said I was starving but it’ll be hours before anything is ready to eat.As if completely on cue my stomach grumbles loudly.

“Here,” Chase passes me a few sticks of jerky. “I always try to keep some of this on hand. I smoked this meat myself a few days before we met you. That should help tide you over.”

“Thank you,” I say through a full mouth.

Chase laughs and zips up the tent after setting my bag inside. I was so distracted I forgot to look at the inside of the tent but there will be plenty of time for that later.

“Where’s Drew?” Chase inquires.

“I’m right here,” he says through a yawn unzipping the door to the boys’ tent and stepping outside.

“How have you been holding up?” Chase asks.

“I’ve had a few narrow escapes in my day. I was sure this last time I wasn’t going to make it, so aside from being more exhausted than a sloth I’m feeling grateful not to be a science experiment at the moment.” Drew confesses.

Drew sits down beside me at the fire leaving a respectable distance between us. He’s got jet black hair that reminds me of an anime character the way it hangs down around his face. He’s rather pale, and the contrast makes the honey color of his eyes look even more striking.

“Ash!” Chase calls as I appraise Drew.

“I’m on it, I’m on it. There’s something not too far from here. I should be back in a jiffy.” He offers a cocky grin as he pulls off his clothes.

I cover my eyes with my hands and hang my head. I am not sure I’ll ever get used to the nakedness that surrounds shifters.

“Next time find somewhere private to strip down,” Chase says annoyed.

There is no response from Ash, only the sound of the wind blowing through the trees as he disappears into a nearby thicket.

“Drew, I’d like it if you joined us.” Chase says, his voice is even keel without a hint of questioning or insincerity.

I open my eyes and see that Drew’s pale skin is now tinged with pink on his high cheekbones.

“Are you sure?” He asks, looking between the three of us.

“I am. Unless you have a pack you need to get back to. With these scientist hunters turning us into lab experiments it’s toodangerous for any of us to be on our own for too long.” Chase suggests.

Chase reminds me of the great Roman war leaders you’d hear about in history class. He stands tall, sturdy, and chiseled. I can even make out some definition in his abs through the t-shirt that lightly clings to him.

My stomach flutters again and I realize I am holding my breath. I’ve never seen a morehandsome man in my life.

A thought that is only amplified by the fact that all these men I am here with now are extremely good-looking. I feel like I am traveling with a group of models or movie stars.

I’m not the only one who has noticed either. I see the way the girls in town look at me with envy and hatred as I roam around with my new friends. I don’t blame them; I’d probably do the same if I was on the outside looking in.

After a moment of silence Drew says, “There is no one left from my pack. They were taken out by these hunters a couple of weeks back and I’ve been on my own ever since.”
