He looks like he might want to say something too, but I don’t want to lose my courage so when I see him suck in a breath and then part his lips to speak I muster up the courage to break the silence first.

“Chase,” my voice is a soft murmur carried away by the night breeze, “there’s something I need to tell you.”

He turns his gaze toward me, his eyes reflecting the moonlight almost as if they are glowing like the moon itself. “What is it, Madison?” he asks with a gentle curiosity.

I take a deep steadying breath and my words tumble out in a rush. “I overheard you and the guys talking about me being yourmate that day I was napping in the tent. I just pretended I didn’t because I didn’t know what to do or say at the time.”

Chase’s expression softens, “Madison,” he says, “I didn’t mean for you to find out that way.”

A nervous energy flutters in my chest as I continue, “I talked to Dustin earlier and he told me that I need to follow my gut and not let my fear of my broken brain stand in the way.”

“Well, he might not have said all of that but that’s what we were talking about while we were painting and I…”

Oh no, Madison, get it together you are rambling!

“Well anyway, I just wanted to say I don’t know all that much about wolf-shifters and their mates, but I do know one thing.

I feel at peace when I’m around you in a way I’ve never felt at peace before. It feels like I have finally found my home, and it scares the hell out of me.”

Chase stops walking and turns to face me, “Madison,” his hand reaches for mine sending volts of electricity through me. “I understand why you feel scared. I understand why you’ve been holding all this in. I don’t want you to feel rushed or overwhelmed.”

He brings my hand up to his lips and plants a soft kiss on the back of my hand. His lips are soft and warm, and my stomach flutters.

“I must say, I am relieved to know you didn’t run away right after hearing our conversation that night and I’m also surprised that I now owe Dustin a thank you.”

I giggle, a sort of nervous laugh that helps open the floodgates to the tension that was building up between us.

“Do you think I am your mate?” I ask with wide eyes looking into Chase’s.

He smiles and lets out a sigh, “I know you are. With shifters, it’s not as confusing as it is for humans. We have this feeling that is accompanied by the involuntary urge to protect. Frombefore I even laid eyes on you in the woods, I knew I’d somehow stumbled across my mate.”

His words hang in the air between us. I look into his eyes, searching for any sign of uncertainty. Instead, I find sincerity and confidence.

Chase squeezes my hand gently, his thumb tracing soothing circles against my skin. My eyes find their way down from his eyes to his gorgeous lips, lingering.

I want to kiss him. I want to hold him tightly and never let him go. I am tired of living in fear.

Slowly, I raise myself on my tiptoes and lean forward. My lips press against his gently, his eyes flash with surprise.

In another moment his arms are wrapped around my waist and my body is pressed tightly against his. The kiss becomes hungrier and needy as the seconds pass.

Sighing out a breath of relief I pull back just far enough that our lips are still barely touching, “Would you like to spend the night with me?”

“There’s nothing I’d like more,” he says and scoops me into his arms, not stopping the kiss, not pulling back. He carries me into the house. We both pretend that there is no one else home as he brings me into his room.

Chapter 11

Chase

Every cell in my body is burning alive. Heat pricks at me where Madison’s body is pressed against mine.

Her kisses are tender and sweet, they make me ravenous to consume her, but I don’t want to rush this one bit.

I shut the door to my bedroom behind us and slowly set Madison down on her feet. The world stops spinning for a moment as her eyes lock onto mine.

She is beyond beautiful. With her doll-like eyes and pouty full lips.

“Are you sure about this?” I almost hesitate to ask out of fear that she’ll change her mind.
