After a few moments, I peel my face out of the cushion, “I guess I thought if I could stop being a hindrance, my mom would love me more, but I ended up never hearing from her again.”

“That is so sad,” Dustin says reaching a hand over toward me and patting the back of my calf to comfort me. It does feel nice to be cared for.

Chase’s jaw is tightly set, and his hands curl into fists. Hatred radiates from his every pore. It’s like I can feel him vibrating from here.

“If I get my hands on that dude, he’s going to wish he was never born.” He barely gets his words out through gritted teeth.

“You won’t be alone in that,” Drew announces.

“Hear, hear! I’d like to see that idiot try to get through our pack.” Dustin winks in my direction.

An unexpected warmth spreads through my chest. I don’t remember ever having more than one person care about me like this. That’s why it was so easy for Jax to keep his claws in me. I believed him back then when he said I was special and mature… but now I think he was more excited about my lack of community than anything else.

Have I finally found the place I belong and the people I belong with? I sure hope so…

With this group of weird scientists and black op humans on the loose, the prospect of any of my new family members being harmed by them haunts me. We are all going to be alright, I just know it. I breathe out the tension squeezing my eyes shut. I am tired of being a victim and I won’t let Jax or these other idiots ever turn me into one ever again.

“Hey guys, wow, it looks great in here! We have furniture!” Ash and Isaiah come through the door and stop in their tracks.

“What did we miss?” Isaiah asks, narrowing his eyes at all of us huddled around the new couch in the living room.

The blue light of the laptop embraces me once more. So far, I’ve had no luck finding out any more information about this group but now I’m thinking about digging into various tech group conspiracies and seeing if I happen to find any overlap.

I sit at a small desk near the window, my legs folded up beneath me. The only sound that fills the room is the clicking of the keyboard and the occasional restless sigh that leaves Chase’s lips as he sleeps on the bed beside me.

Chase is so innocent-looking when he sleeps. The muscles of his face relax, showing the plumpness of his lips and the length of his eyelashes. His cheeks are slightly pink from the warmth of the blanket mixed with the coolness of the air creeping in through the open window.

Longing fills me. I want to crawl into bed beside him and nuzzle into the comfort of his warm chest having his muscular arms wrap around me… I shake my head and force myself to look back at the computer screen. It’s not nearly as enjoyable of a view but I do my best thinking uninterrupted, and it is important that I gather as much intel as I can while everyone is still asleep.

Finally, I find myself on a thread that might be helpful. Blinking my eyes into focus I devour the words on the screen. My mouth hanging open. I look back at Chase, still fast asleep, though I am half-tempted to rouse him from his slumber and tell him about everything I’ve been reading.

Rather than waking Chase up, I shut down the laptop, and the room fills with darkness. Slowly and somewhat clumsily I clamor over to the bed and sneak in beside Chase. Even in his slumber he senses my presence and pulls me in tightly against him.

Relief washes over me. My brain is too busy processing everything I read but it feels amazing to be held. I watch the window from the comfort of Chase’s arms as light creeps across the sky. Purples, blues, and pinks give way to the golden morning light.

“Did you sleep at all last night?” Chase’s voice breaks the silence in the room, and I flinch. “Guess that’s a no, huh?”

“I couldn’t after the information I uncovered last night.” I say softly.

Chase’s muscles tense under me, as though he wants to bolt upright.

“What did you find out?” He asks after a moment; his muscles relax slightly.

“This group seems to have three main corporate focus areas. There’s tech, real estate, and banking. Which makes sense right? Tech and real estate allow them the equipment and the building space to set up whatever facilities they want, under the radar. Banking is relatively self-explanatory. Money talks.” I relate to him.

“That does make sense.”

“They call themselves the DHS apparently, The Dark Horizon Syndicate. The idea being they are trying to save humanity from the dark horizon they believe is impending due to coexisting with shifters.” I continue.

“Any idea what corporations are involved with DHS?” Chase asks now fully awake.

“I’ve got a few ideas; they might not be completely accurate but it’s a good place for us to start. Code Wave Technologies and Neural Nexus Labs, are the two tech companies I found that might be associated with the group. There was only one real estate business I could find connected to them in any way, and it is named Elite Land Holdings.”

“Interesting, what about the banks?” He asks fully focused now.

“Atlas Financial Holdings.” I state.

“Are these state-specific, national, or global groups?” he questions.
