My hands run down her back and cup her bubbly ass; she groans against my mouth nibbling at my bottom lip.

She had a rough day; how do you know this is real? The warnings in the back of my mind won’t stop no matter how hard I try to push them away.

I pull back and her frenzied mouth tries to bridge the distance but with a heavy sigh I breathe, “Wait.”

She looks at me puzzled, a flash of confusion and surprise in her eyes.

“I can’t do this,” I whisper.

“Oh I- I thought,” She backs up red in the face, and wipes at her mouth with the back of her hand taking a step back.

“No, I want to, oh God, don’t get me wrong. I want to.” I plead.

She glances down at the bulge in my pants and half smiles, “It seemed to me like you did.”

“I don’t want it to happen like this. Not when you’ve been through something traumatic. I feel, despite my best efforts not to, like I am taking advantage of you.”

She smiles attempting to hide her disappointment, but the drop of her shoulders gives her away, “That’s gentlemanly of you. How about a glass of wine then, while we wait? Or perhaps something a little stronger?”

Chapter 4

Lorelei

“Mom, I am fine really. I made a friend in town and my windows will be fixed today. He owns a fish and chips-based pub, so I’ll be paying him back for a while with foraged herbs and plants for his special sauce. I only had to wait about a week with the plywood and the canvas on the windows to cover up the graffiti. I ended up getting more business out of it, so I’ve decided I’m going to tint the shop windows.”

“Well, that’s good honey,” Mom says with a heavily disappointed sigh. “What kind of business does this town seem to bring you?”

“The usual, fertility, love, and wealth potions mostly. A few folks have come around for healing potions and tinctures but not as many as I expected.” I answer quickly, glad she has moved to a different topic.

“You know people, they are always a little more grandiose than practical when given the opportunity.” She says bitterly and she’s right.

“Speaking of health potions, how is dad?”

“He’s holding up honey. If I ever come across the witch that cursed him, I’ll kill her with my bare hands, I can promise you that.” Mom says with vengeance in her voice.

“I’m sorry Mom. I sent a care package with a new potion I’ve been working on, especially for Dad. Please give it a try when it arrives in the mail. I think it will help his condition.”

“Thanks, sweetheart, I’m going to hop off the phone now before I cry. Love you.”

“Love you too.” I answer.

My poor dad is a victim of a jealous witch’s hex. He had no idea that she’d had possessive feelings for him when he met and fell in love with my mother. But suddenly his health took a downward turn when mom and dad became a solid couple. I’ve never known my father to be anything but ill.

Honestly, he should probably be dead, my guess is that’s what the evil witch wanted. But dad’s love for my mom and, after I was born, for me, seems to keep him hanging in there. Even if it is a rather dismal existence.

Mom’s never forgiven herself and I don’t think she ever will. Not that it’s her fault in the slightest. My dad was known to be a bit of a player back in the day and, as much as I hate to feel this way, he brought it on himself.

Of course, I don’t believe anyone deserves to be hexed but that’s the price of sleeping around and scorning a powerful witch. Still, one of these days I will figure out how to break through her curse. It’s a promise I made to myself when I was a little girl and I intend to keep it.

Shit,it’s two minutes past open. When I rush downstairs, Isaiah’s massive frame waits at the door.

“Hey, sorry,” I say jingling keys in hand as I flip the sign to open.

“No problem, Lorelei. I just figure I better get your phone number in case something like that defacing and breakagehappens again.” His eyes meet mine sending a flutter through my stomach.

“Oh, of course.” I step aside and motion for him to come inside. “I was on the phone with my mom and lost track of time. She’s not too happy about the shop being vandalized. If she had it, her way I’d be on my way back home to the city this instant.”

“It’s nice that she cares about you.” He says with a shrug that boils my blood.
