Brendan’s rasping laugh brought Sienna out of the grass. She stared at him, then lifted her luminous gaze to fix on me. I gave her a little finger wave from my lap, stretching my thighs as I rose without breaking the damn chair and took a step towards her.

She disappeared back into the grass, but not before I saw the grin on her face that was full of mischief.

“She wants to play."

Brendan levered himself out of his chair, sliding his hand along the wall as he made his way inside. "Chase her, son. Or you’ll lose her in that stuff if it’s as long as I think it is.”

"It is. Give me a list of things you need done around the house while I'm here."

Brendan huffed and said nothing else.

I jumped off the edge of the patio, heading for the patch of grass where Sienna played with the badgers, but both it, and her monochrome friends were gone.

Swearing softly, I searched the grass heads that swayed gently in a non-existent breeze, tracking the movement that headed towards the trees. My step lengthened as she broke into a run, disappearing between the trees just like she did on the night of the cave.

This time, I was determined not to lose her.

I caught up with her a few paces inside the shadows that blocked us from sight. Our momentum and her giggles took usstumbling between the old trunks and dodging the branches that seemed determined to decapitate me.

The sharp scent of pine needles and damp earth rose around as I finally tangled myself around her flailing limbs, swinging her around in my arms until she caught my shirt, breathless. Then I kissed her until any air left between us turned to those soft sounds she made that simmered my blood.

“I missed you,” I mumbled against her mouth between quick breaths before our lips melded together again in the language neither of us spoke but we both understood.

Her arms twisted around my neck as she jumped. I caught her, slinging her on my hips. My palms grazed over her denim clad thighs, holding her Lucious form tight to my body. I leaned back against one of the trunks, studying her face as she laughed at me, high on mountain air and the kisses of the girl I was fast falling for.

“You going to talk to me this time, wild child?” I was content just to drink her in, memorise every subtle feature on her face I hadn’t already committed to memory.

How her lips quirked as she thought of something she wanted to say but didn’t. Her hair that tangled around her face in a halo, curls winding in the hollow of her throat, damp with sweat that looked sexy as fuck on her.

The way her lashes swept down before she lied to me.

“Maybe,” she murmured, barely louder than the wind’s breath between the branches above us.

“What about your friends? Am I worth an introduction?”

“Later?” she offered, leaning in to press her hands to my shoulders, steadying herself where she settled on my hips. “Kiss me?”

“Maybe?” I took her weight on one hand, squeezing her ass and working my fingers along the seam of her jeans where her heat emanated like she was bare before me until a little mewlbroke from her lips. “Is this all we’re gonna be? A quick fuck away from everyone?”

She shrugged, and I sensed anothermaybeon her lips, but she surprised me. “Is that so wrong?”

“Only if it’s not what you want,” I replied softly, hoping the sound my heart made when it shattered wasn’t audible to her.

She took in my tight features, the way my hands flexed on her body, and leaned into me. “Help me forget, Kyle.”

It was the first time I’d ever heard her say my name, and that on its own after the months I’d seen her before I got to know her shook me enough. When her lips pressed to mine all I could think to do was fill her mouth with my tongue and taste that admission over again.

For fucking ever.

Her moan when I kissed her soundly left no doubt in my mind how this afternoon would go. I squeezed her ass with both hands, leaving a resounding slap on one denim covered cheek and lowered her slowly.

“I’ve got no objection to finding a good tree for this, but you got some place in mind you like?”

She nodded happily and we were back to the realm of no words as she grabbed my hand and towed me forward with confident steps. My legs still trembled, and not from the weight of her—hell, Sienna weighed about as much as a damn dandelion.

Arousal rocketed through me, though my heart still ached. I got what she needed, though what I didn’t know waswhy. And every single inch of me wanted to understand her.

If she even knew herself.
