She led me along the shadow of the mountain, right on the line of light and dark to a small clearing covered in ferns and grasses that looked soft but stuck in my back when I’d sleptin them. Especially after too much of Gage’s moonshine on the other side of the range.

But Sienna didn’t stop there, crawling onto a few boulders that made a small ledge. I clambered my ungraceful ass up behind her and when she turned me around, there wasn’t just one thing close by that stole my breath.

We’d come up higher than I thought. The little outcrop looked out over the house, though I didn’t think we could be seen from it. The horizon carried into the distance, all autumn tones of golden grasses merging with thick pine forests and tiny snowcapped peaks far to the west.

I slung my arm around her waist, pulling her back into my chest and nuzzled the spot below her ear that made her sigh. “Is this your regular shag pad?”

I expected her to blow me off, as always.

“I’ve never brought anyone here. Not even–”

She broke off, and I let her, resting my chin on the top of her head and studying the vista she presented.

“Thank you,” I murmured, wrapping my other arm across her chest and holding her to me tight.

She hummed softly, reaching up to close her hands as far as they’d go around my forearms. Her body softened as she leaned back against my chest, trusting me with her secret, and her safety.

When she tipped her head back, her lips parted in invitation, I claimed her mouth in a kiss I was sure would topple us right off the mountain’s jagged face. Her hands tangled in my hair and we tumbled to the ground, tugging at each other’s clothes, desperate for bare skin and nothing between us.

She didn’t try for control this time, pushing and pulling to free us both, and I slid into her slick heat with blood on the backs of my hands where they rubbed frantically against the granite beneath us, desperate not to hurt her. The pain didn’t evenregister as her body tightened beneath me. This sort of love was of the frantic variety where we seared the memory of each other soul deep into each other’s flesh.

Her cries mingled with my moans that broke against the mountainside. I slammed deeper, needing her closer than she was, crushing her body to mine. A groan ripped from my mouth as she scored her nails along my arms, and my spine tingled at the base. I knew I was close, and covered her mouth with mine, savouring every sound she gave me.

Sweat broke over my back as she locked her ankles behind my hips, and came with the sort of haunting cry I knew I’d hear in my dreams for years to come. Not that I had the energy for that thought. My orgasm hit me like a landslide that crushed me against her beneath its weight. I shuddered, her name ripping from my throat as I marked her inside and out.

Fuck me if I didn’t already love this girl to the ends of the Earth and back.

But as she curled in my arms, sobbing her need softly, only the mountain was witness to my promise.

CHAPTER SIX

I met more badgers in the space of one afternoon than I ever planned on meeting in a lifetime.

“Aren’t they dangerous?” I chucked one under its chin.

The fluffy ball of juvenile animal–this one certainly wasn’t full grown–sniffed at my raw knuckles and butted my hand with its head, rolling and tumbling into my lap. “And are they usually this friendly? I thought they were, you know...”Rabid little beasts.

Sienna smiled and shook her head. Thejust fuckedlook sat fresh on her glowing face, and it suited her perfectly. Just like the harsh mountain backdrop and the softer wildflowers that danced around her.

“Never thought I’d be sitting in long grass playing with these things,” I muttered while a baby badger gnawed at my knuckles. “Ah, is that gonna give me anything?”

Sienna rolled her eyes at me. “Just love. Stop being such a scaredy cat.” She rubbed the back of the mother who rolled over and presented its tummy for her like a fucking dog.

“I swear you’re magic.” That she just insulted me didn’t matter. I leaned across the badger to kiss her, and the damn thing hissed at me. “The fuck? Are you her bodyguard now?” And now I was talking to it. What was this girl doing to me?

Not that I needed to ask myself that. I knew I was falling for her hard, the plummet-off-the-side-of-the-mountain-in-freefallsort of hard, and I didn't care when or where I would crash, as long as I got to be with her.

“Are you staying for dinner, Kyle?” Brendan called from behind us.

“Was thinking about it,” I yelled back, not taking my eyes off Sienna.

Perfection.

But my head told me the situation was all sorts of screwed up, even if my heart refused to recognise the red flags. Finally, I cleared my throat.

“How do you guys survive out here? I saw the cattle was a long way off.” I trailed a fingertip along her arm, the need to touch her too strong, and this time, the Mumma badger let me be.

Nothing near the house was grazed or looked after. At this rate a hard storm would turn the structure into a soggy collection of matchsticks. There were a dozen other things I could ask about, but Sienna jumped to her feet and held out a hand.
