A second later, heavy steps thudded in the hall. Lexis entered, eyes bloodshot and hair mussed like he’d been roused from his sleep.

“Abel,” he said in a gritty voice. “Lark said you fucked up.”

“I killed a guy.”

The air was sucked out of the room. Beside him, Wren turned to an unmoving statue.

Lexis cut a hand through his hair. “Start talkin’.”

“The guy she was with had her by the hair and was dragging her across the room. I intervened, and he pulled a knife. There was a small skirmish—”

“You and that damn word,” Lexis growled.

He plowed on, “Short story is that I directed the knife back at him, and now he’s dead.”

“Jee-zus, brother,” Julius bit out.

Lexis leveled Jennings in his hard glare. “So you dropped a man and took off with his girl?”

“Pretty much.”

“Did you doanythingright?”

“I saved her, didn’t I?”

He glanced at Wren. Fear crept into her already shocked expression.

He locked eyes with her. The depths of her baby blues were as dark as a wild sea.

“I’m undercover.” He used the low tone reserved for frightened dogs.

Her eyes widened.

“And you’re not really that good at it.” Julius’s comment made Jennings swing his way, middle finger in the air.

He and Julius shared a glower. “Look, I could have done things differently, but now I need backup.”

Lexis pushed out a sigh. “Okay, here’s what you’re gonna do. Go back to the clubhouse. Make everything look good.”

Jennings nodded. “We need cleanup for the body while we still have the cover of darkness. There won’t be anybody at the church right now. They’re out on drug runs.”

Wren issued a low moan.

Automatically, he moved to her side. “This is my team.” He stabbed a finger at each person. “Lexis, Livingston, and that asshole is my brother Julius.”

Before he could get to the last member, Lark spoke up. “I’m Lark.”

“I’m Dove.” The voice from the doorway had everyone pivoting to see the second pregnant woman coming forward. Right behind her was the third wife of the Sentry team and his brother’s own wife.

“I’m Avalynn.”

Wren’s stare shifted from person to person. After a long heartbeat, she said, “I’m Wren.”

“Ahhhh!” Lark’s cry had her husband grabbing her arm.

“Are you in labor?” Lexis demanded.

“What? No. I’ve got months and months left to cook your son here. I’m screaming because…well…she’s one of the birds!”
