Despite the pain radiating through his skull, he laughed. “You carry him. I’ve got your six.”

With a sigh, Julius hooked the fallen criminal under the arms. His body hit Julius’s shoulder. Julius’s ranting was loud enough to be heard over the fire. “Days ago it was a guy in your trunk. Now this. No idea why Mom made me the big brother. You could be cleaning up my messes.”

His brothers irritated the hell out of Jennings, but he ignored him as he led the way out of the building with Julius right behind.

Smoke clogged all the corridors, cloaking the exits. He held his breath and ran for it, checking over his shoulder every few steps to make sure Julius was following.

Through the thick gray smoke, he spotted the door. Using his shoulder, he slammed through it and staggered outside. Wildly, he scanned the parking lot.

Wren. Where was she?

His stare landed on a pair of people. Livingston and Wren seemed to be in a tug of war. He grasped her arm, holding her back, and she strained with all her might to get away.

“Let me go! I have to get him!”

“Julius has him! Don’t you hear that hissing? The gas is turned on. The place is about to blow!”

Jennings raced away from the building, right toward Wren.

The relief washing over her beautiful face left him ready to find a jeweler on his way out of town and buy a ring immediately.

“Go!” His vocal cords threatened to sever from the force of his bellow. He jerked his arm back and forth to wave her forward.

This all happened in a blink. He twisted back to help Julius get the criminal to safety before the explosion took them all out.

An SUV was parked feet away with all the doors open. Livingston practically threw Wren inside. When he slammed the door, she turned her face to the glass, watching him pound his way across the short span of pavement.

He and Julius hurled the criminal into the back seat and leaped in behind him.

“Drive!” His order set Livingston in motion. He gassed the vehicle.

“Oh…my…god.”Wren’s words came at the same time the church exploded.

The vehicle rocked from the blast. Livingston stomped the gas harder and sped away from the scene.

Wren twisted in the passenger seat to look at him, her eyes wide and round. “Jennings, your bike!”

“Don’t worry about it now. We’re out. You’re safe.” He locked gazes with her.

Her bottom lip trembled. The love in her eyes burned as bright as the intense flames.

When they hit the road leading to East Canon, he realized the man he’d shot was stirring. He glared down at him.

The guy cracked an eye.

“You damn near killed us!” Jennings cocked his fist and slammed it into his face.

The guy passed out again.

“Damn, Jennings. Remind me never to fuck with you.” Livingston’s dry tone brought an unexpected giggle from Wren.

She pressed her fingers to her lips to hold it in.

That sound was the water of life. It was the very air that Jennings breathed.

He reached over the front seat to touch her shoulder. When her soft fingers rested over his, he let his eyes slip closed on the pure love coursing through his body.

He’d get her out of this place. Give her the chance to rest and heal. Then he’d do everything in his power to make her the happiest woman alive. If she wanted that medical degree, he’d help her get it. If she wanted her brother transferred to a bigger, better facility far away from here, he had the connections to make that happen.
