“Siobhan, she’shuman,”he said. “Watch what you say.”

“I know that.”

“Do you know him?”

“He’s the bouncer. And ya know, we know everyone here.”

“You don’t know me,” I protested.

Siobahn patted me on the head and with a kind smile, she said, “It’s ’cause you’re…just you. It’s okay. But now we can be great friends. Isn’t she so cute, Vin?”

“Siob—“

“His name’s Vin, by the way.”

I turned towards him. “Like the actor.”

“That’s not his real name, you know. Vin was my birth name.”

“Better than howls-at-moon. How’s Nora?”

“Nora…she’s dealing with stuff,” he said.

“Still her lackey.”

“She’s the future of the pack.”

Siobhan shrugged as she grabbed her newest beer bottle that the bartender had sat in front of her. They placed another drink in front of me. The bartender winked at me. Siobhan pointed a finger at him.

“Not for you! But keep the drinks coming!” She turned back to me. “Are you single?”

“Yeah. Single as a…”

“Viiiiiiin, she’s single,” Siobhan sang.

Vin nodded. “I heard her.”

“Why are you still here?” I asked.

“I’m getting drunk,” he said. His eyes shifted to the door.

“Is there something better out there?”

“No. It’s pretty okay here, too.”

I laughed as I took another swig.

Chapter 2

Vin

Fuck St. Patricks Day.

Pierre had assigned me to start the day and Gryndor would finish the night. Spending the night babysitting drunks the night before the full moon was not my plan. I loved my job normally, but there were certain days it was worse. Gryndor had warned me about how bad today would be. He was correct. What he didn’t warn me about was that he was bringing his girlfriend. She was nice, but whenever she was around, Gryndor was not. I could tell his dragon was on the surface, which is why I stayed. Even drunk, I could intervene if someone touched Chels. A crazed dragon let loose on a bar full of drunk humans and supes was not the best thing.

Why did he let her come?I sighed as I looked at the door. The small figure walked into the bar. Many of the supes gave her a wide berth. Even from this spot, I could smell Gryndor’s smell rolling off her. No, trouble wouldn’t come from the magical community. It would come from a human. She flitted around that part of the bar. Gleefully chatting with various people. Maybe she knew them, maybe she didn’t. She seemed healthierthan when I first met her a few weeks ago. I just didn’t enjoy talking to Gryndor if she was around. He knew, well, I hope, that I wouldn’t do anything to her. The threat of his beast beingtherewas enough to put any shifter on edge.
