Madeline laughed and moved her hands, pressing her palms to my chest. The song ended, and Madeline’s warmth left my body as she pulled away and walked back to our seats at the bar.

“It’s getting late,” Madeline said, looking at her phone. A quick glance of my watch told me it was close to midnight. “I should probably find Ophelia.”

“Here.” Before she could walk away, I took her phone from her hand and added my info to her contacts. “My number.” I said as I handed it back.

She smirked. “Oh, good. I need that.” She touched my arm. “How did you get here?”

“I drove,” I said simply.

She turned her head. “I don't see Ophelia or Clay anywhere, so I think I need a ride.”

I pulled my phone from my back pocket and swiped the screen open to find a text from Clay.

Clay: You and Maddy seem to be getting along great. I’m gonna take Ophelia back to our place. Have a good night, man.

“He sent me a winky face.” I turned my phone and waved it toward her. I sighed and shoved my phone back in my pocket. “It’s not surprising they ditched us.”

She laughed. “Some double date, huh?”

I lightly touched her chin with my thumb and finger. “I’ll pay the bill and take you home.” I dropped my hand and smiled. “And it’s been a wonderfuldoubledate.”

Chapter Three

-Madeline-

Did it bother me that Ophelia and Clay took off without telling me? Absolutely not.

Milo was different. He wasn’t what I was expecting at all. He held my hand as we left the bar and opened the door to his small Toyota for me. I climbed in and buckled up, watching him from the windshield as he made his way around the car, a skip in his step. I grinned and glanced down at my fingers, smoothing my skirt against my thighs. He was so adorable I couldn’t take it anymore. Was adorable the right verb usage here? Hot? Sexy? Nah, that skip was downright adorable.

“What dorm do you live in?” he asked as soon as he was situated in the front seat. He pulled his buckle over him and glanced over at me, one hand on the steering wheel and his eyes focused on me.Oh, those eyes.

“Commons,” I responded, a sigh in my voice. I was well aware of the fact that Ophelia had gone to stay with Clay and she most likely wouldn’t be home tonight. I wouldn’t mind Milo coming up to my room, having even more time with him, but then out of nowhere it dawned on me that if I had a guy stay over in my dorm room, I had the possibility of getting caught. I gave a slight groan, counting down the days in my head until Ophelia and I got an apartment of our own. “Where do you live?”

He turned the car on and shifted to reverse. “I live off State Street in the Joshua Apartments.” He caught my gaze as soon as he shifted the car in drive. “With Clay.”

“Ah,” I raised my chin and turned to the front of the car. “So you won’t be going home right away then, huh?”

He shrugged. “I’m used to Ophelia being over, but…” he hesitated. “Would you like to go get ice cream or….a burger….or,” he trailed off, giving me a sideways glance.

“More food?” I chuckled. “We just ate at the bar.”

He shrugged again, this time tilting his head toward me and meeting my eyes. “I’m just not ready to give you up yet.”

I chuckled at him. “I’ve had a great time too, but I have exams to study for. I have your number, and we can totally do this again.” I slid my hands under my legs, a sign of my nervousness. I didn’t exactly want the night to end either—but…exams. Logic crept into my brain. I looked at my legs, knowing if I looked at Milo, that logic would dissipate.

His smile grew. “I can live with that. I’ll take you home then.”

I was tempted to hold his hand as we made the short drive back to campus, my stomach fluttering as I mentally prepared myself for a good night kiss. I fully intended to kiss him and see him again in the future. I had that feeling. The butterflies in my stomach. The increased heart rate. And thanks to nerves and anxiety, I was definitely producing more saliva than normal. I swallowed, hoping to tone down the pool forming by my front teeth.

Milo pulled the car up to the parking lot and turned the engine off. Being the gentleman he was, he came and opened the door for me, taking my hand and helping me out. His other hand went into his pants pocket as he led me to the door. Not twenty steps later, I had to let go of his warmth to dig through my bag for the key card.

He turned to me, stepping closer. “I really had a great time tonight,” he said softly.

I looked up at him, the key card in my hand. “I did too.” I smiled back, hoping he would step closer.

A kiss was coming, I could feel it, but he had to feel it too. The heat from his eyes told me he did, and all I had to do was lean in.

The corners of his lips tugged into a grin. “Can we go on another date?” he asked, taking that final step toward me.
