Yes,I nodded, holding onto his gaze.Kiss me.

He must have read my mind, because he leaned into ever so slightly and gently put his lips to mine. His lips were warm and inviting. I swear I felt some sort of magnetic pull bringing us closer and closer. He pulled away, the kiss lingering on my lips. Then, without warning, he inhaled sharply and kissed me again, pressing his lips against my mouth with full force. He parted his lips, trying to force something that was, obviously now, no longer there.

I tried to kiss him back, raising my hand to touch his shoulder, but as the kiss grew deeper, the worse it got. It was slimy, wet, and full of tongue in a way I wasn’t expecting. The soft gentle kiss from the second earlier was the hint of something fantastic—not whatever this was. I could literally taste the beer that hung in his mouth and the fried food he had eaten, and as his hands slid up my back, I furrowed my brow and winced.What. The. Hell?

This didn't feel like a kiss between two people who had amazing chemistry. This reminded me of the kiss my first boyfriend gave me. The one who had clearly watchedtoo many cheesy romance movies and most likely practiced on his pillow. This kiss from Milo was one that could ruin kissing for me for the rest of my life if it went on too long. I needed it to stop, immediately.

I pulled back, arching away from him even though his hands were still firmly on my lower back. Any chemistry I’d felt between us was taken away with one simple, but not so simple, kiss.

I pursed my lips and avoided his eyes. I wish I knew what was going through his mind. His eyes were still closed, eyebrows raised, a look I couldn't quite describe as his lips still sat slightly parted, as if he was waiting for more. Did helikethat? Was thatgoodfor him? If he was expecting anything from me now, I didn’t know if I could.

“That was…” Milo hesitated as his eyes fluttered open, clearing his throat. I swallowed, my brows pulling even more.Did he really think that was a good kiss?He shook his head and took half a step back.“Terrible. I’m sorry.”

I widened my eyes and looked back at him. He stepped away, rubbing the nape of his neck with his hand.

“I mean…” I began, trying to find a way to save what had happened, but there was nothing that could salvage that. Absolutely nothing.

“No, no…” He shook his other hand in front of him, as if to erase what had transpired. “That was miserable.”

I wasn’t quite sure how to react. I wanted to laugh, to brush it off, and maybe try again, but afterthatkiss, I really had no desire to try again. I pursed my lips, trying to hold in laughter. Milo furrowed his eyebrows and looked at me through his lashes.

“I’m sorry. I don't do this at all,” he mumbled, taking yet another step away.

“Milo,” I started. “It’s okay.” I chuckled. He looked up, his face full of embarrassment. His eyebrows furrowed, eyes dropping to the ground. His cheeks reddened, and he fidgeted, stepping back and forth and farther and farther away from me. I stepped forward, trying to hold the smile in, and reached for his arms. “I mean, yes, the kiss was terrible, but I still had a good time tonight.”

He took a deep breath and looked up. “I’m sorry.”

“Why?” I managed to mutter.

“C-can…” he fumbled. “Can we try again?”

I couldn’t hold it in any longer, and laughter burst from my lungs, filling the space between us. The harder I laughed, the more I curled in on myself until I was staring at our feet through teary eyes. My entire body shook, dispelling the butterflies that were in my stomach moments ago. It was comical, really, that this man who I had amazing chemistry with earlier in the night wanted to try again after that horrific kiss.

Milo remained rooted in place while I composed myself, and eventually, I cleared my throat and looked at him. I expected to find him appalled by my outburst—embarrassed maybe, but instead an awkward grin had formed on his lips. I was relieved he found this as amusing as I did. I watched as his smile grew, and eventually, he laughed.

I raised my hand to my mouth, covering it to stop my latent giggles. Milo’s laugh steadily grew in volume as he dropped his head on my shoulder.

“Oh, man,” he sighed, lifting his head and running a hand through his hair. “What went wrong?” he asked, his silent laugh still making his shoulders shake.

I shook my head. “It was a great night, just a terrible…terrible kiss.”

“I swear I’m a good kisser.”

I scrunched my nose. “I can’t say I believe you.”

“I can get references,” he said, a laugh behind his serious tone.

“I really don't want them.” I joked back. “Milo…”

“Okay, yeah, I wouldn’t want them either,” he said, nodding. “Well,if you ever…ever…want to try again…”

“I’m sorry to say, but I don't think I’ll want to try again.”

He let out a long groan. “But maybe one day if you do?” he asked sheepishly.

“I know where to find you.” I took a step back and held out my hand. “Thank you, Milo, for a great night.”

Narrowing his eyes and pursing his lips, he reached and shook my hand. The warmth of his palm was still there, and his hand fit perfectly into mine. Maybe there was something there, but it wasn’t what we wanted it to be. Milo let go of my hand, awkwardly waved goodbye, and then turned to his car. Watching him climb into the Toyota and drive away, I made my way up to the empty dorm room, shaking my head. That moment wouldn’t be going away anytime soon. It was ingrained in my brain. Forever.
