“Thea, Rebecka, it’s time to use your Earth alchemical powers and stop this leak,” Alexandraya directs with her newfoundpower confidence.

Both girls simultaneously chant and circle their green Propensity fingers. A covalent chemical bond appears, hovering above the exposed earth. Together they work in unison, suspending the magical elixir before carefully wielding it into position.

I am holding my breath at the complexity of this critical element. It will determine if we succeed in our debut Surface World mission. The stakes have never been higher.

Eyes locked together, Thea slowly nods her head to Rebecka, and both girls release the elixir. The heat of the chemical bond hisses as it encounters the escaping molten. Within seconds, the cavity is successfully sealed. The bleeding heart of the earth is now healed. And my breathing returns to normal.

Suspended water crashes down refilling the whirlpool, and the waterfall returns to its previous flowing glory. Brooklyn drops to her knees and weeps at the relief of releasing her power. Julius crouches beside her taking her hand in his. They are bound by the enormity of this momentous experience.

Emotions are running high. I turn and outstretch my arms ready to congratulate the semi god next to me. It’s Alexandraya. She physically recoils at my gesture, turning to Roman instead. Henry fills the gap left behind and shakes my hand in congratulation.

There will be no sign of any interference. And no mortal will ever be aware of how an underlying disaster, almost struck their realm.

The sun is starting to rise but Henry intervenes and covers it with darkness. “Time for some well-deserved rest guys, this will give us a few hours,” he says as we wander back to the apartments for the last time.

As we leave, I notice the same stealth group from the other evening vanish behind the waterfall. The Core?

Chapter12

Siriarna

After a successful mission, a chariot is summoned to return us to Evolirium. Surreptitiously we climb aboard, shielded from exposure by a veil of glamour. The chatter amongst the group is subdued compared to our initial mission departure as exhaustion sets in, each semi god lost in their own thoughts.

Back on Evolirium, we make our way to the dormitory huts to catch up on some much-needed rest. It’s also a good chance to combat the travel lag before tomorrow’s debriefing with High Power Omnisensus. I hang back, happy to walk on in silence. Taking my time, I stop in the meadows, find a patch of clover, lie back, and close my eyes while breathing in the lightly scented Evolirium air.

“Hey, Siriarna, mind if I join you?”

Opening my eyes, I spy Braxton’s floppy chestnut hair. “Sure, pull up a clove.”

“That was a great mission, don’t you think?” he says smiling, taking a seat next to me. “I bet your guide parents will be thrilled when you tell them all about it.”

“As I’m sure yours will be, too.” I return his smile.

Braxton shrugs. “Maybe. I mean, my guide mother will be, butmy guide father really couldn’t care less.”

“What was it like, living with your guide parents?” I ask cautiously, catching his voice change when speaking about his guide father.

“I couldn’t wait to get out of the Home Realm. I stayed longer than I wanted because I didn’t want to leave Paulette with that man. Paulette summoned a chariot for my 15thbirthday. She said my life had to progress, that my future awaited. She said she’d chosen hers, with Nicholas, and she had accepted it a century ago.” His eyes fill with a nostalgic mist as he speaks about Paulette.

“She seems like a wonderful guide.” I gently respond.

Nodding, he says, “She is, and I should visit her more often. As soon as my powers progress, I will return to the Home Realm and set things straight.”

His jaw has set into a tight clench, and I place a comforting hand on his shoulder, “You are gifted with magic Braxton. I’m sure you will achieve everything you wish for.”

“I spend as much time as I can studying every chant and Propensity history on Time. I knew in the Home Realm Time was my future. I have my sights set on The Core, then I will be able to help Paulette. And Nicholas will pay for the misery he has caused.”

The passion in his voice is a mix of determination and hurt. “The Core would be lucky to have you.” I say gently.

“What about you? Do you have any future plans brewing away?” he asks changing the subject.

My brow furrows as thoughts of Ms M and her revelations enter my mind space. “Hmm, not really.” I say absently biting my lip.

“Siriarna, you look like you have the weight of the realm on your shoulders. Do you want to talk about it?”

I am in two minds, but the concern spread across Braxton’sface counteracts Simeon’s warning and I share my secret. “I had a reading by a mortal clairvoyant, and her discovery has left me with many questions."

The relief of sharing my new burden is instantaneous. Braxton is encouraging and patient, listening intently as I speak. He shows no judgement as I explain my new magic development, even when I tell him I have no control over the erratic nature of this new power. “You know, I don’t think there has ever been another semi god in history with such a skill. It is usually a high god’s-only power,” he muses thoughtfully.
